In 1886, Rancho Palos Verdes was founded by George P. Brown and his brother, John A. Brown. The ranch consisted of 8,000 acres and included a number of villages including Encinitas and Hermosa Beach. In 1898, the First World War began and the United States entered into war with Great Britain. This led to an increase in demand for firearms in California which in turn led to the beginning of the Rancho Palos Verdes gun company. The Rancho Palos Verdes gun company became one of the largest firearm manufacturers in California during the early 1900s. It produced a wide range of firearms such as rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers. The Rancho Palos Verdes gun company also ventured into manufacturing bicycles and motorcycles during this time period. In 1955, George Payson died at age 92 years old and his son John A. Payson succeeded him as president of the Rancho Palos Verdes gun company. At that time, it was one of the largest firearm companies in California with over $1 million in assets . John A .Payson continued to produce firearms for both military and civilian use until his death on October 2nd, 1984 at age 89 years old . Since its inception in 1886 until 1984, Rancho Palos Verdes has been home to some of America's most famous riflemakers - from George Payson to Benelli Brothers - all making their mark on American history with their products or through their contributions to society

Rancho Palos Verdes is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, California. It was part of Rancho Santa Fe de Borrego, which was granted to José Maria del Valle by Governor Pedro Menéndez de Avila on November 15, 1821. The grant included land that includes present-day Palm Springs and La Quinta Lakes. The name "Rancho Palos Verdes" was given to it by Captain John Sutter during the 1846 California gold rush. The first permanent settlers in Rancho Palos Verdes were José Manuel García and his wife Juana Inés Pacheco who arrived in 1847. Other early settlers, including Francisco Barrett and Juan Crespí, arrived later in that year. By 1850, there were about 20 residents living on the rancho. In 1857, José Maria del Valle sold Rancho Palos Verdes to Fernando Woodruff for $8,000 cash plus 250 acres (120 hectares). At the time of its sale, Rancho Palos Verdes consisted of 975 acres (350 hectares). From then until 1862 it was used as a grazing ground for sheep and cattle owned by various ranchers within the largeración de la Compania de Borrego Land Company headed by Carlos Márquez y Arce. In 1863 Daniel Webster bought 1/4 mile (0.6 kilometers) of what is now Calvert Street from Fernando Woodruff for $600 cash with an option to purchase more if needed. Daniel Webster's family continued to own this property until 1919 when they sold it back to Woodruff's heirs for $1 million with an option to buy an additional 999 acres (449 hectares). 2 miles east of RanchoPalosVerdes on Via Campudio Road stands another grist mill built in 1865 which served as a water tower before being demolished in 1964; this mill is still visible from a distance noting some unusual features such as four large archesStone quarries at nearby Anza Hills have been important sources of aggregate for many structures in downtown Los Angeles since at least the mid 1800s
