Rancho Palos Verdes, California is a community located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 82,653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area and is adjacent to Downtown LA. Rancho Palos Verdes is one of largest Bears Ears National Monument areas in the United States. The community was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1851 and named for Rancho Santa Anita, about 20 miles east of here on the San Gabriel Valley floor of Pasadena Peninsula. The original rancho consisted of 8,000 acres (3 km²). By 1860 it had grown to 100,000 acres (40 km²). Most of this land was offered as parcels to blacks seeking new land west of Los Angeles. In 1871 Mexican nationals were invited to purchase 640 acres (240 hectares) northeast of town from James Irvine for $5 an acre ($140 today), which they did. This rancho became known as Rancho La Brea after developer John Sutter bought it in 1879 for $10 an acre ($280 today). In 1902 Sutter sold La Brea to Wm Haskins & Company for $1 million (about $27 million today). They built what would become one of Southern California’s most famous homes: Beverly Hills Manor (now Bel-Air Estates). Meanwhile, other Mormons started arriving in Las Vegas during this time period hoping to find richer lands beyond the Great Basin Desert and into present-day Nevada and Arizona. Rancho Palos Verdes is a census-designated place in Orange County, California, United States. It is located on the eastern coast of San Diego County and on the border of Riverside County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 73,904. The name comes from Rancho Palos Agustinos de Anza (1836), which was given to it by Governor Pio Pico as part of Rancho San Vicente Catastrophic Earthquake Disaster Settlement Act Grant.
Rancho Palos Verdes was founded in 1853 by Rancho Santa Margarita landowner Manuel Nieto. The name derives from the Spanish word palos, meaning "pines." The date of its establishment is unknown, but it likely occurred between 1853 and 1860. In 1862, a post office was established at Rancho Palos Verdes, and in 1865 a school was established. A year later, a theater opened and soon became an important entertainment district for the town. By 1880, Rancho Palos Verdes had a population of about 2,000 people. In 1886, Antonio Dominguez purchased some of Rancho Palos Verdes' lands and began to build the first known horsecar line in California. This transportation system allowed goods to be brought into this area cheaply and helped spur development in this part of the state. In 1896, Antonio Dominguez donated two tracts of land north of his original holdings to establish City Park on these properties. The city developed around this park over time and now includes several neighborhoods within its boundaries: North Beach (to the east), South Beach (to the south), East Palo Alto (to the west) and West Palo Alto (to the north).
