He named his land Rancho San Vicente de Tabora after his patron saint, St. Vincent of Chartres. The area that today includes Rancho Palos Verdes was part of Alta California under Mexican rule until 1848 when it was transferred to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1860, Captain Nicholas Sepulveda purchased land north of town from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $2 million dollars; this property later became known as Chavez Ravine Park. In 1868, George Wickersham bought 1/3interest in the newly formed Santa Monica Railroad from Jules Rolland and began operating it as a passenger train between Malibu and Beverly Hills. On November 5th, 1870, Wickersham donated all remaining interest in the railroad to become part of the Pasadena & Westlake Railway Company (P&W). The P&W continued running trains between Pasadena and Westwood until 1971 when it merged with Amtrak to form America's Railroads (AR). On January 1st 1889, following annexation by Los Angeles County of adjacent Ventura County (from which it had been separate since 1850), Rancho Palos Verdes incorporated as an unincorporated community within Los Angeles County; this occurred despite objections from some residents who wanted their own community built on their land. At that time there were only a few hundred residents living hereabouts; by 1907 there were over 10 thousand people living here according to censuses taken every year beginning with 1910. By 1920 census figures there were almost 30 thousand people residing hereabouts; during World War II many soldiers came through here on leave before going off into battle abroad while still connected with family back home – they called this area "The Strip". A post office operated at Rancho Palos VerDES from 1888 until 1912; mail was delivered by horseback riders or wagons drawn by mules overland across hills near present-day Glendale Boulevard and Lankershim Boulevard east of town limits: these routes crossed at Springbrook Canyon Road just outside town limits then passed through Knolls down into open countryside eastward whence they reached Ridgecrest Drive bordering North Hollywood prior to turning southeast past present-day Burbank High School then rejoining Lankershim Boulevard approaching downtown about midway along its course whereupon they turned northeast again passing North Hollywood continuing northeast past present-day White Sands Mesa before ending at Lankershim Boulevard coming suddenlyTo Stillwater about midway along its route near Present day Linda Vista Avenue . From 1909 until 1922 no street address could be obtained for any reason other than "Rancho", postal officials simply gave letters containing that name instead thereof throughout all official records related thereto (eXclusively responses bearing "Palo VISTA" or "Santa MONICA"). This practice continued unchanged even though current addresses are not provided herein because those letters would have included both rural addresses such as 2190 Ridgewood Ave., reverting back to rancher Jose Aguirre y Valdes' original ranch house #1 described supra if extant) . In 1916 Postmaster General Lawrence Condon ordered all newmail boxes constructed without identifiers such as streets or numbers so that letter recipients might know where their mail went when they received it Although discontinued effective 1952 due presumablyto changes brought aboutby suburbanizationof LA county caused by various air raids during WWII ; however local ZIP code 90022 remains active online thru AR's website
