The Rancho Palos Verdes Pistol and Rifle Club was founded in 1922, by a group of gentlemen who pooled their money to purchase an old adobe ranch. The club moved to its current location on Vista Mesa Drive in 1966. In 1978, the club purchased a rifle range from the Mutual Arms Company. In 1984, the club donated land to the City of Rancho Palos Verdes for use as a park. Today, the city owns and operates the range. The club continues to offer shooting programs for residents of Rancho Palos Verdes and surrounding communities.
Rancho Palos Verdes, California is a community located in the San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 112, Pixar Animation Studios, Weta Workshop are all located in Rancho Palos Verdes. It is a planned community that started to be built in the early 1960s and has since grown to over 100 acres with five schools and two shopping centers. The history of Rancho Palos Verdes began with three families who purchased 640 acres of land in what is now Rancho Palos Verdes Village on January 15, 1961. The original developers were John Conder, George Prentice and Edwin Sanger who had intentions of creating a small town near their ranch home called Sunnyside. They bought the land from Jameson & Company which was then part of Pacific Telephone Co.. After some construction work began on the village they announced that they would not be finished until 1966 because they needed more time to find a way for people to commute into town and do business inside the village. That year they held an open house where everyone could come see what they were working on. The first homes were built between 1966-1968 and originally sold for $2,500 each. In 1970 another group purchased additional land around the edge of the development so that it became known as Forest Lawn Village after Harry Forestine who donated his acreage to the cause. In 1973 Ronald Reagan gave an address at Chatsworth Manor which led to more businesses moving into Rancho Palos Verdes including Weta Workshop which moved from New York City in 1976 and opened their doors there in 1978 followed by Pixar Animation Studios in 1984 who made their studios there until 1997 when Walt Disney Pictures moved out too due to redevelopment plans around Calabasas Boulevard). In 2006 President George Bush visited RanchoPalosVerdes during his presidential campaign tour while he was campaigning against John Kerry which led to increased traffic congestion around Ventura Boulevard as well as more businesses coming online including Starbucks Coffee (now Dunkin' Donuts) which opened its first store there in 2006 followed by Burger King who set up shop next door before eventually closing down due to low customer ratings sometime afterwards).
