Rancho Mirage, California is a town located in Riverside County, California. It was founded on November 3, 1885 by James Irvine and his wife AnnaMaria Irvine as the Rancho Mirage Game Preserve. TheIrvine family developed many businesses in Rancho Mirage including the Irvine Camera Company, Kaiser Permanente Hospital and several others. In 1954, the City of Riverside built its first municipally-owned building which remains at 2100 West Olive Drive to this day. In 1966, the City of Corona merged with Riverside County and became Corona city. On December 1st of that year, Corona city passed an ordinance establishing the city's first police department. The history of scopes began here in Rancho Mirage when American astronomer David Rundle bought land near what is now Tom Doherty Park for $10 per acre in 1892. He immediately began making telescope components and selling them to other astronomers across America. His company name was "Telescope Manufacturing Company" until 1916 when he changed it to "David Rundle & Sons". In 1922 he donated his equipment to Kodak who used it to develop their own camera products soon after becoming a major player in photography industry; thus beginning Bronkite Camera Corporation's (later KODAK) long relationship with Rancho Mirage! The company continues today with more than 100 employees productionally involved in making wine grapes and other alcoholic beverages under several brands including Ranchero Vintage Tasting Room Wine Company; Maverick Winery; Napa Valleyintage Winery; Cabernet Sauvignon Ancient Vineyard; Paso Robles Vintage Vineyard; Malibu Creek Cellars & Winery; Black Mesa Vineyards.; Mendocino Coast Zinfandel Company.; Sutter’s Mill cellars.). Rancho Mirage offers many activities year-round for its citizens which include golfing (the links course is rated among the best in Southern California), swimming beach access (including both salt water swimming pool and freshwater pool), horseback riding (available all year round), skiing (both downhill or cross country) as well as tennis (the city has one professional tennis court). There are also several restaurants including two chain restaurants: Pizza Hut featuring pepperoni pizza doughnuts made fresh daily at their pizza ovens on site right next to where you can eat your salads or pasta dishes while seated outdoors on an outdoor patio complete with umbrellas/helmet protectors effective against sun exposure during summer months ();and Red Lobster (); while local wineries produce some very fine wine varieties such as Russian River Valley Zinfandel Agricultural Co., Dry Creek White Blended Aged Pinot Gris Nebbioli.,Wildcat Canyon Shiraz.,etc
Rancho Mirage was founded in 1907 by Rancho Cucamonga landowner John P. Moriarty, Jr. It became a part of the City of Los Angeles in 1909 and then became a part of the County of Orange in 1912. The city annexed it in 1916. In 1924, the city dissolved and the county took over all local government, including Rancho Mirage. The last vestiges of Rancho Mirage local government ceased to exist on January 1, 1929 when all functions were transferred to the newly created City of Los Angeles.
