The Rancho Mirage Shooting Club, Inc. (RMSC) was formed in 1952 as the first organized shooting club in Rancho Mirage, California. The RMSC is a non-profit organization that promotes and defends shooting rights for all citizens of Riverside County by providing training and instruction to individuals of all ages, from beginner to experienced shooters. The RMSC also strives to provide a safe environment for shooters by conducting monthly practices at various sites throughout the community. The origin of rifle shooting in Rancho Mirage can be traced back to the early 1800s when pioneers began settling the area around present-day Rancho Mirage. Rifle shootings were held at several locations until 1875 when they were moved to what is now the RMSC property on North State Street. In 1907, Richard Ayer donated land east of I-15 which became known as "Ayers Park." This park served as a venue for rifle shoots until 1945 when it was used as a munitions dump during World War II. From 1945 through 1951, rifles were only allowed to be fired at night due to overpopulation concerns within Riverside County; however, this prohibition was lifted in 1951 after stringent safety regulations were put into place following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In 1957, the RMSC leased portions of Anza Field from UC Riverside for use as an air pistol range; however, this lease expired six months later and no further use was made of Anza Field with the exception of occasional target practice sessions which took place there from 1959 through 1963. In 1966, groundbreaking ceremonies occurred at Anza Field when US Air Force Major General Edwin Ebbetsh agreed to lease part Of The University Of California's campus adjacent To Anza Field For Use As A Gun Range And Pistol Range; however this lease expired two years later without any subsequent use being made Of The Campus! Since its establishment in 1952, RMSC has been instrumental in helping promote firearm safety among both novice and experienced shooters across Southern California! Today, members make up an overwhelming majority (> 90%)of our membership who are dedicated regulars & enthusiasts alike! We believe passionately that everyone should have access to safe firearms training & instruction - regardless their age or experience level!
