The Rancho Mirage Shooting Club was founded in 1922 by the late Harvey L. Weisman and his wife, Agnes. The club is located on the edge of town in an area that was known as "the shooting range." In 1923, Weisman purchased land east of Palm Springs to create a hunting preserve. He named the preserve "Rancho Mirage" in honor of his wife's home state of California, which he had visited while touring the area with his brother-in-law. The ranch would become one of the most popular shooting ranges in California, hosting many events including finals for the National Rifle Association (NRA) and other firearms competitions. In 1951, Weisman's son, Harvey Jr., founded another shooting club in Rancho Mirage called The Rangeshooting Club. This club continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1978 due to poor finances. In 1990, Norma Giannini opened her own gun shop within walking distance of TPC Sawgrass and began offering lessons to members of The Rangeshooting Club. It wasn't until 2001 when AGI Sports Enterprises became associated with TPC Sawgrass and began marketing their products at that facility that shooters could purchase ear plugs made specifically for target practice sessions at their range. Starting in 2003, AGI also produced a line of muzzleloader ear plugs called Grizzly Ear Plugs which were designed specifically for use during muzzleloader hunts or target shoots at ranges across North America. These ear plugs are still being produced today and can be found online at various retailers such as Walmart or Amazon; they come complete with a hard case and instruction booklet given to each customer upon purchase.) Rancho Mirage is a small town in Riverside County, California. The population was 8,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Palm Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rancho Mirage was founded in 1907 by members of the Carr family as a citrus orchard and cattle ranch. The Oranges were first picked by John Sutter from his orange orchard on Mount Wilson in 1855 and became part of his holdings in Rancho San Jacinto which he divided with his wife Josefa between them in 1868. From 1912 to 1924, it was part of Los Angeles County; then In 1932 it became Riverside County's only incorporated village. The name "Rancho Mirage" comes from two sources: one account says that early Mexican traders named their place Monterey because they arrived there after crossing the Bay Bridge into California; another story says that Captain William Sather landed at what is now Rancho Mirage about 25 miles (40 km) north of Los Angeles on July 29, 1819 when he led an army punitive expedition against hostile Mexicans near present-day downtown Lompoc. He discovered and named an area including present-day Rancho Mirage alongshore during this expedition. In 1907, J P Carr acquired 760 acres (300 hectares) of land east of Orange Crush Road and south of Hwy 10 for $10 per acre ($2 per hectare). His son Benjy Carrs continued to develop the orchards while Hiram Bickham managed the ranch house and farm buildings until 1923 when he sold them to Ira Helmsley who also developed Mission Viejo as a resort center on portions of what are now Old Town Riverside Drive and North Coast Boulevard. By 1927, 100% OF THE RANCHO MIRROR GARDENS WAS OWNED BY IRVING HELMSLEY AND HIS FAMILY INCLUDING A TREEHOUSE ON AN EDGEWOOD ROAD NEAR THE RESORT'S CENTERpiece remaining today is known as Helmsley House #1 where President Harry S Truman vacationed during World War II . Croman, as a citrus ranch on the edge of what is now known as Simi Valley. The name came from the Rancho Mirage Golf Club which opened in 1912 and was designed by Harry Vardon and Co.. In 1938, Jack Warner bought the golf course from Croman for $5 million and turned it into Hollywood's first all-night movie theater (the first movie theater in Southern California). The theater continued to serve movies until 1977 when it closed due to code violations. In 1984, Warner Bros.'s Empire Pictures division took over the property and restored it as an all-day movie park with a variety of theaters including one that seats 4,000 people without sound or 3D glasses. In 2013, Hollywood's last all-night movie theater Opryland reopened as the world's largest "3D IMAX" screen with 2,500 seats. The film industry has since moved away from large screens such as these towards digital formats such as 3D Lenses & Monitors (3DLM) which allow audiences to see films electronically while seated within their own personal space using special eyeglasses or headgear called "IMAX glasses." Rancho Mirage also contains several interesting historical buildings: The Palazzo del Carmine which was built between 1911–1913 for banker James Phelan; The United States Mint Building which served as mint office during World War II;and two hotels: Ambassador Hotel – built in 1929 by millionaire Clifford Odets – and Regency Hotel – built in 1926 by architect John Breen.
