In 1886, citrus growers James Irvine and Wm Henson bought land adjacent to what is now Riverside Drive between Ventura Boulevard and Observatory Road for $1 million dollars to establish what would become Citrus Heights Mall. The mall opened in 1989 as one of Southern California's first enclosed malls with over 100 stores including Sears, JCPenney, Macy's, Disney Store and Kmart. The mall closed in 1997 after being taken over by Overland Park furniture retailer Landsdowne Furniture Company which then merged with IKEA to create an even larger furniture store called IKEA Home & Kitchen within two years of its opening. It has been reported that some developers were interested in redeveloping or reopening the Plaza del Carmen shopping center which sat on acres next to the three ranches but never happened due to opposition from local residents who wanted their community back as it once was before development occurred outside their control

The history of Rancho Mirage began with Nicholas Rancho and his wife Emma who were both farmers. They decided to move to Riverside County in order to be closer to their families back in Mexico City. In 1870, they founded theNicholas Rancho Agricultural Society which aimed to promote agriculture in Riverside County. The society also donated land for a school district which opened in 1872. In 1881, they donated additional land for a hospital which became known as the University of Southern California (USC). The university moved out of its original building in 1922 but retains part of it as an exhibit hall. Today, Rancho Mirage is home to many interesting institutions such as: USC – now known as USC Trojans; American Museum of Natural History; Metropolitan Park District; Chapman University ; and many more!
The Rancho Mirage area was originally inhabited by the Mono people. The area was first explored by Diego Rivera in 1821, and it was later claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. In 1848, Christopher Columbus discovered the island of Santa Catalina in what is now called California. The mission on the island became known as Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, and a ranch was established on the island to house the missionaries. In 1851, a group of Mexican citizens set out from Baja California to find new land in California. They named their new settlement Rancho Mirage after one of their number, Manuel Nieto. The town of Rancho Mirage was founded on September 12, 1853, and it quickly became a popular destination for Americans looking for a summer oasis in Southern California. On October 25, 1860, President James Buchanan signed legislation creating the US Army Corps of Engineers to study ways to improve water supplies in Los Angeles County. One result of this study was the construction of reservoirs near present-day Rancho Mirage and elsewhere in Southern California. By 1870, there were over 400 residents living in Rancho Mirage proper and another 450 scattered throughout southern Orange County and eastern Riverside County. However, during that same decade – following a devastating fire that destroyed much of downtown Irvine – many people chose to move away from ranching country towards larger towns closer to urban centers like Anaheim or Thousand Oaks instead of returning back east into brushy hills near Redondo Beach or Hermosa Beach where wild animals roamed free (and where alcohol could be bought).
