These are still standing and can be seen from portions of town today. In 1876, GarZA sold 1,500 acres (600 ha) to Héctor Reyes for $10 per acre ($320 per km²). Reyes named his new community after himself – Playa del Carmen y los Osobos (Canary Coast and Bears), reflecting his love of nature. In 1892, Harry Chandler purchased 724 acres (280 ha) east of town from Héctor Reyes for $32 per acre ($1,440 per km²). Chandler renamed his new community after himself – Palm Springs – reflecting his interest in outdoor living and the climate there. This business District ran parallel to La Cañada Flintridge Boulevard until 1912 when it merged intoowntown Pasadena while also including much of what is now Desert Hot Springs within its boundaries north to south; desert residents subscribed to this plan which included an increased water allocation from downtown Pasadena without having to leave their homespun townspun communities east or west side of Pasadena like many Southern Californians did during this time period making them very dependent on government services

The name "Rancho Mirage" was given to the community by Major General John Pershing after he and his army invaded Mexico during World War II. The Pershing Ranchos were a series of large ranches that stretched from east to west across Orange County. They were named for General Pershing's older brother, who had acquired them in 1873. The first residents of Rancho Mirage arrived in the early 1920s when citrus growers started arriving to grow fruit on these properties. By the late 1920s, ranchers had built several thousand square feet (200 m2) of housing and 400 miles (640 km2) of irrigation systems to support their crops and livestock. In 1930, local businessman Harry Sizemore bought 1,000 acres (400 ha), making it one of the largest citrus holdings in Southern California. Sizemore developed Rancho Mirage into a thriving community with many businesses including hotels, restaurants and retail stores as well as an amusement park called Flamingo Park which opened in 1937. During World War II, many Los Angeles-area servicemen came through Rancho Mirage on their way home from combat; they stayed at local hotels and drank alcohol while enjoying viewings of aircraft carriers moored offshore or taking off from Naval airfields ashore nearby. After the war ended, people returned to their lives within ranching families and towns such as Mission Viejo grew up around them until Interstate 10 divided this rural area along its routes between Orange County on the north side – now known as Irvine – and Riverside County on the south side – now known as San Bernardino.– see also: History of Riverside County
The rancho Mirage area was first settled in the 1880s by Spanish Americans. The name, which means "mirage" in Spanish, comes from a local mountain peak called Mirador Mesa. The land that now makes up Rancho Mirage was purchased by ranchers from Mexico in 1912. From 1912 to 1940, it was part of the rural district of Indio County. In 1940, the area became part of Riverside County and has been under the jurisdiction of that county ever since. Rancho Mirage is one of Southern California's most affluent counties and has a population of over 266,000 people as of 2010. It covers an area of 113 square miles (291 sq km).
