Rancho Mirage is a small town in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 2,865 at the 2010 census,[1] down from 3,045 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Palm Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a ranch on land given to it by Governor Manuel Nieto in 1911 by his wife, Indalecia Pacheco de la Vega y Montero. The first home in Rancho Mirage was built on what is now known as First Street and Pershing Avenue. In 1912, J.P. Morgan & Co.'s representative bought 1/2 acre (0.14 km²) of the present-day corner of First and Pershing Streets for $5 per acre ($[2]). In 1913, Evelyn Waugh visited Rancho Mirage while she was visiting her friends in Los Angeles and wrote about it in her book "A Room with a View". Waugh's husband later became owner of one of Rancho Mirage's earliest homes on Third Street near what is now Topanga Canyon Boulevard - which still stands today and overlooks the city center today - after buying another ranch elsewhere within Riverside County.[3] Rancho Mirage initially grew only citrus crops but eventually diversified its crop production into other fruits and vegetables such as grapes and honeydews; soybeans; almonds; flowers; olive oil; cattle; pearls and chrysolite gems (a type of gemstone). The community also manufactured goods including saddles, millinery items such as fans or hoops earrings, clocks and other household objects early on. In 1960 the city of Palm Springs annexed Rancho Mirage making it an incorporated municipality with its own police department before becoming an unincorporated borough within Palm Springs when that city merged with Brea to form City Of Orange County in 2003.
Rancho Mirage was founded in 1887 by Francisco Bandini. The original rancho, now known as Rancho Mirage Estates, was a 6,000 acre (20 km2) tract of land that stretched from San Bernardino County to Riverside County. In 1912, it was divided into two tracts: one belonging to the Henry Ford Foundation and the other to Guggenheims Inc. The portion of Rancho Mirage that is now in Riverside County was first settled in the 1840s by Mexican Americans who came from Mexico City.
