With its opening of Lasky's studio in 1915 – coinciding with Henry Ford's introduction of motion pictures – Rancho Mirage became an important center for film production across Southern California and became known as "the most photographed place on earth." The area also attracted leading figures in American politics such as Franklin D Roosevelt and William F Douglas during World War II; however much industry diminished after the war ended and ranching declined thereafter until it again increased slightly during the 1990s with new housing developments being built near Interstate 5 along Reseda Boulevard. However by 2016 local media had reported that much of this activity had stopped due to environmental concerns following revelations about high levels of lead exposure at some former Movieland locations south of town
