The area became part of Riverside County after the war and has since been characterized as a model community for suburban development. The history of Rancho Mirage can be traced back to 1867 when Spanish colonialists granted grazing rights to José Joaquin Morrone and his brother-in-law Manuel Nieto on what is now known as Rancho La Paloma. In 1887, cattle ranchers arrived in what is now Riverside County and began leasing sections of the Palomares Mesa along with other tracts of land to farmers for raising crops and grazing livestock. By 1915, there were over 100 individual ranchers operating in Riverside County; most were involved in farming or ranching pursuits although a few had interests in manufacturing or tourism. Beginning in 1933, aircraft manufacturer Lockheed Martin purchased large portions of surplus Army Air Forces airfields throughout Southern California including many at Ryan Airport near Corona (renamed John F Kennedy International Airport after President John F Kennedy). These fields came to be known collectively as "Los Angeles AFB" because all but one were located within Los Angeles City Limits
Rancho Mirage, California was founded in 1867 by Don CarlosIrvine and his brother Antonio. The Irvines were Spanish-born Mexican ranchers who had arrived in the area in 1847. They started a cattle ranch and grew crops. In 1865, Don CarlosIrvine married Emma Smith, daughter of an Englishman who had settled in Los Angeles County. The couple moved to Rancho Mirage and began to improve the land around their home. By 1870, they had built a large house on a hill overlooking their rancho. The Irvine family prospered until World War II when they lost much of their wealth due to the war effort. After the war, many of the original settlers died off or moved away; however, some stayed behind and continued to farm and build homes. In 1945, Don CarlosIrvine donated his estate including more than 20 miles (32 kilometers) of desert coastline to the state of California for use as open space.
