There are references to firearms on Rancho Mirage land as early as 1833. This date is significant because it marks the beginning of Rancho Mirage being a part of what is now California. In 1868, John Wesley Powell, an American explorer and naturalist, traveled through the area and noted that there were "many small villages with their huts located in the mountains" and "several Indian towns".
