The first Europeans to visit Rancho Mirage were Spanish soldiers who landed there in 1769 during the Mexican War. A ranch named La Habra was acquired by Captain John Sutter in 1847 and sold to George Copley Pembroke, 5th Baronet in 1848 for $4,000. In 1850, Pembroke donated land for a military post called Fort Myer within present-day Rancho Mirage. The fort was abandoned in 1853 when Mexico withdrew from California. In 1865, following completion of Southern Pacific Railroad's mainline from Los Angeles to Redlands via Needles Pass, ranchers started selling water rights along railroad tracks that now run through downtown Rancho Mirage. One such buyer was Benjamin Harrison Coolidge who built his mansion on what is now known as Coolidge Drive near City Hall before giving it back to the city after 20 years as part of a deal which included Yuma Proving Ground land east of Interstate 10 and town center square blocks north of Prospect Avenue between First Street and Second Street Streets). In 1933 White Sands Missile Range opened its gates providing employment for over 9000 people at nearby Simi Valley while many other businesses closed down due to World War II rationing; some reopened after the war but most notably Bechtel Corporation shuttered their labs at Simi Valley Airport during 1945 because they could not compete with Boeing Aviation production facilities nearby at Downey Field (Boeing would continue doing business here until 1989 when they moved manufacturing operations elsewhere). Additionally Earhart Air Force Base opened up nearby conducting research into aeronautics during World War II; later renamed Edwards Air Force Base 1946 it became home to numerous commands responsible for air defense activities throughout Southern California including Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to repelled Japanese forces fighting ashore against Marines ashore at Guadalcanal on New Georgia Island 1943-1945; nevertheless portions of Edwards AFB remain active today hosts various USAF squadrons performing aerial refueling flyovers/ Dogfights etc.) A new freeway called I-215 was constructed concurrent with large housing developments going up around Downtown Rancho Mirage including Sunline Village Parkway Extension 1935 - 1941 followed by Sunrise Village Parkway Extension 1942 - 1945 then finally Desert Inn 1960s - 1970s although all have been demolished or replaced by newer structures since then! As late as 1978 adjacent towns of Indio and Riverside were being served only by passenger trains running between Indio Station northwestward via Mountain View Road northeastward through rural areas ending at Main Plaza southbound passing under I-15 about midway thence onward continuing northwestward via Pioneer Road emerging into Riverside County serving both towns primarily except for brief periods during rush hour when trains stopped unexpectedly outside both stations! Today Amtrak operates daily service between Anaheim/Los Angeles Union Station and San Francisco’s Embarcadero BART station stopping briefly outside Downtown Palm Springs before continuing onshore reaching Downtown Ventura CA just past Sepulveda Boulevard below Market Street before terminating shortly past Santa Anita Racetrack next door where passengers can transfer onto Amtrak Express buses heading eastbound towards Sacramento or westbound towards Redding or Stockton
