Rancho Mirage is located in southeastern California, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. It is a city of over 50,000 people and has a population growth rate of 2.5% per year. The economy of Rancho Mirage is based on agriculture, with cattle, horses and pigs being the mainstay of the industry. Rancho Mirage was founded in 1911 by John C. Fremont as Rancho San Diego de las Palmas y Gaviota del Oeste. In 1932 it became part of the City of Los Angeles and was renamed Rancho Mirage after its annexation into the city. The population peaked at 100,000 in 1960 but has since declined to below 50,000 due to various factors such as joblessness and loss of housing stock during the post-World War II period. The history of ranchos can be traced back to when Spanish explorers discovered large amounts of gold hereabouts in 1776-1777 during their exploration for new land eastward from Mexico City. Soon thereafter several grants were made totaling more than 248 square miles (772 km2). Today only 18 percent or so remains undeveloped BLM land within boundaries defined by these earlier grants; most remainder are developed into homesites or other suburban areas adjoining major cities or business districts.. The first white settlement at Rancho Mirage took place around 1868 when Father Junípero Serra arrived with his party from Santa Fe Springs via Mission Viejo en route to Guadalupe Island near Point Loma in Southern California where he established a mission called Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (Our Lady Of Conception). Serra's group also erected some small buildings on what would become today's town center including three Mexican adobe houses now known as Pioneer House #1; Pioneer House #2 south side across street from current Post Office building & West Side Store; & East Side Store later known as A&W storehouse which still stands today - all overlooking San Gabriel Valley countryside behind mountain range! These early settlers soon realized that they needed water rights on nearby racetracks so they began constructing dams and reservoirs upriver which would provide them with water free forever! Unfortunately for them their efforts resulted in numerous floods that destroyed many homes, plantations and fields along the lower River Tujunga between 1862-1867!!! Today only one house remains standing from this time period: Nuestra Señora de la Concepción Dam - now part of University Park neighborhood adjacent to downtown LA!
