In the early 1800s, Rancho Cucamonga was a small agricultural community in southern San Bernardino County. The area now known as Rancho Cucamonga was first developed by Spanish settlers in the 17th century. The original name of the community was Pinos Altos (High Peaks), and it is said that there were only six or seven families living in the area at its inception. By 1853, Rancho Cucamonga had grown to include over 100 acres of land. In that year, an act passed by the California Legislature granted title to the town to Capt. George Waddell and his wife, Maria Lina de la Garza Waddell. Mrs. Waddell donated $5,000 towards enlarging and improving the town hall and other public buildings. The Town of Cucamonga was incorporated on January 24, 1854. By 1870, rancho boundaries had widened considerably and portions of Rancho Cucamonga were annexed into other settlements including Ontario and Thousand Oaks. However, over time some residents managed to keep their connection to their ancestral land while others moved away for better opportunities within California or elsewhere in America. In 1906-1907 a group of Californians who resided near Big Sur decided to form a self-supporting shooting society entitled “The Big Sur Riflemen’s Association” with the goal of maintaining accurate records for ammunition production throughout Southern California and beyond as well asassing “friendly rifle matches” against other groups from across America during summer weekends at various locations around Big Sur Coast Range National Monument). In 1969, 77% of all chicken production within Orange County was done on Toro Farms property in neighboring La Crescenta; today that number has dwindled to about 10%. Thanks to advances in agriculture and forestry over the past few decades, much acreage surrounding Rancho Cucamonga has been converted into residential neighborhoods such as East Anaheim Hills and Westminster (just east of Interstate 5). However, despite this growth there is still much left to be seen in terms of history and culture at this picturesque community located just south of Los Angeles County line on route 66 between Pasadena and Santa Ana!
