Rancho Cucamonga is a small city in California, located in the Angeles National Forest. The population was 11,954 at the 2010 census. It is northwest of Los Angeles and southeast of Pasadena. The area now known as Rancho Cucamonga was first inhabited by the Tongva people, who were expelled from their traditional homeland near Tucson in 1853. The area was part of captain Gabriel García Márquez's Rancho San Buenaventura de Anza grant awarded to him in 1874. The town began as a cattle ranch run by Eustace McGee, one of García Márquez's companions on his ill-fated attempt to cross the US-Mexico border during the political Wild West era. In 1912, rancher George Hearst founded what would become Hearst Corporation with money he had won at cards playing poker against other ranchers. The company built a series of magazines including "Life" and " Vanity Fair". In 1923, Hearst purchased 666 acres (27 km2) around present-day Rancho Cucamonga for $10 million; it would be used for farmland and training horses for racecar drivers. He named it Hearst Hills after himself and his wife socialite Helene Zetterholm Carlson (1901-1987). Hearst turned to farming instead of racing when he developed his land into an agricultural powerhouse that produced hay, carrots, apples, oranges and other crops until the early 1990s when environmental factors forced him to sell most of his land off to developers. Rancho Cucamonga is a small, unincorporated community located in the East County of San Bernardino County, California. The population was 910 at the 2010 census. Rancho Cucamonga was founded by José Antonio Cucamonga and his wife, María de las Mercedes Pacheco on October 15, 1868. The first post office in Rancho Cucamonga opened on November 5, 1868. Rancho Cucamonga became a city on April 14, 1951. On May 1st of that year the last residents of Rancho Cucamonga left for good when the city annexed it. In 1917 the United States Postal Service established ZIP Code 91723 to serve Rancho Cucamonga area which had been part of ZIP Code 21307 since 1912.
The Rancho Cucamonga land grant was given to José María Cucamonga by the Mexican government in 1834. The grant allowed for a ranch of 5,000 acres (2 km²) and included the present-day city of Rancho Cucamonga. The name of the rancho was also derived from this name, meaning "place where fruit trees are grown." In 1847, Captain Vicente Gómez de la Rúa y Llanos led a party of soldiers through what is now Rancho Cucamonga while scouting for new land grants. He discovered wine grapes growing on some hills near present-day Villa Park and decided to purchase some land for wine production. In 1850, he sold his vineyard holdings to Jesse Fenton who renamed it Rancho Fenton. Fenton later sold his interest in the rancho to José Romero in 1875. Jose Romero continued to operate the ranch until his death in 1915. His widow married John Sanger who bought out Romero's interest in 1916. Sanger named their estate "Rancho Santa Anita" after one of his horses which had been used on the original Fenton Vineyard property.
