Rancho Cucamonga is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 27,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. Rancho Cucamonga is located on the east side of San Bernardino Peninsula and bordered by Riverside to the south and east, Ontario to the north and west, and Japanese Wells Regional Park to the northwest. The first white people arrived in 1859 when two men named John Sutter founded a rancho (land grant) called Rancho Laguna Seca near present-day Claremont. In 1866, Jared Huffman organized what became known as "The Silver Screen" movie theater chain with theaters in Victorville and Lancaster before moving his company to Rancho Cucamonga in 1919. The last movie theater closed down in 2003. It was here that founder Roy Rogers filmed his most famous Westerns such as "The Lone Ranger", "Cheyenne", " Cassidy" and "Wichita". A small shopping center now stands next to Girard High School which served as a set for many of those movies. In 1955, Roy Rogers Jr.'s widow Gladys built her own home on top of an old military airfield just outside of town – still extant today - serving as her family's personal ranch house until her death in 1984. Rancho Cucamonga, California is a small town located in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. The community has been inhabited by humans since at least 10,000 years ago. Rancho Cucamonga was first called Cuesta de la Hacienda de los Reyes (Hill of the Rancho de las Reinas), and it was given to Juan Gabriel Bautista Pico in 1824. The name became Cucamonga in 1873 when James Irvine bought the land from José María Carrillo. In 1924, Ralph Partington developed a citrus orchard on what is now the west side of Main Street near where his home once stood. As part of this development, Partington built a large wooden garage on what is now Block House Road. The garage served as an agricultural store for local farmers and ranchers until it was destroyed by fire in 1942. In 1951, area residents formed the Town of Cucamonga to help promote growth in their small town during the post-World War II period. Today, Rancho Cucamonga remains relatively untouched by outside forces and retains much of its historic charm including its original courthouse and jail buildings which are still used today as ambulatory surgery centers.
Rancho Cucamonga was a rancho that was located in northwestern San Bernardino County, California. The original Rancho Cucamonga land grant was given to José Antonio Flores on November 10, 1871. On January 17, 1877, the Rancho Cucamonga Land and Water Company was organized by members of the Mexican-American community in Northern California. In March 1840, Juan Bautista de Anza discovered and named the area that includes present-day Rancho Cucamonga after his father General José Antonio Flores y Costilla. The first permanent residents of Rancho Cucamonga were Anglo Californians who arrived in 1853 from England. They built Adobe Walls and other adobe buildings in what is now western Riverside County. By 1870, most of this community had left for various reasons: some because they could not get water enough to irrigate their crops; others because of Indians' raids into their villages; and still others because gold seekers found new places to exploit mining claims more easily than doing so near populated areas. In 1877, Gaspard Fournier purchased part of the Rancho Cucamonga property from Juan Bautista de Anza for $5 per acre (1/3 share). Fournier founded Fournier & Co., a mercantile house and grain elevator on lands he acquired adjacent to his new ranchos. Some of this early commercial activity is still evident today at nearby Figueroas Street (now Vine Street) where Fournier's store used to stand before it burned down in 1912.
