Rancho Cucamonga, California is a census-designated place in Inyo County, California. The population was 11,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sierra Nevada foothills region. Rancho Cucamonga was established by José Antonio Marañón and his wife Juana on November 6, 1874 as Rancho de las Palomas y los Algodones (later renamed Rancho Cucamonga). After Marañón's death in 1879, his widow continued to run the ranch until her death in 1923. She bequeathed it to her son Manuel García Marín who later sold it to George Hearst Jr. On July 17, 1948, Rancho Cucamonga became part of the new city of Claremont after Hearst's purchase of the whole Claremont area from the farmers there. The area now known as Rancho Cucamonga was first populated by Mono people who had been living there for centuries before that time. The Mono people were Sweaty Bear Indians and they named their land Los Alamos Range after two mountains in New Mexico which were very high and cool because of their glaciers that covered them during wintertime . The name comes from "alamo" meaning an oak tree or a strong fortification and "cucumber" because it grew well here. Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo came overland through this area on his way from Santa Barbara to San Francisco in 1542 and he called this area El Norte because of all these mountains . In 1847 Mexican nationals Luisiana Pacheco and Sebastián Vizcaíno founded Mission San Gabriel Arcángel near present-day downtown Claremont with land grants from King Felipe V of Spain They arrived too late to see any crops grown but they built a small chapel which still stands today inside what is now Malpasadero Park across Harbor Drive from Claremont College This was also where Pacheco met Californian woman Lorena Sanchez about whom more later . The ranch was founded by Rancho Cucamonga Indian Chief Manuel Nieto in 1869. The name of the rancho comes from the word "cucamonga" which means "wild olive tree." In 1914, Rancho Cucamonga became part of the United States when it was acquired by President Woodrow Wilson as part of his promise to give America's Hispanic population a homeland. Today, nearly 70% of Rancho Cucamonga residents are American citizens. The rancho began as a small farming community with a few hundred acres. By the 1920s, however, many families had moved to the area and ranchers had built large ranches with thousands of acres. One such rancher, Antonio Selvador Gomez, built one of Hollywood's most famous movie studios on his property at Hacienda la Brera in 1928. During World War II, much of Rancho Cucamonga was used for military housing and airfields. After the war ended, manyfamilies returned to their homes but some continued to live on estates near Hacienda la Brera until they were bought out by new owners in the 1960s. In that decade also came another important development for Rancho Cucamonga - its incorporation into Orange County as part of what is now known as Southern California . Today there are over 1 million people living in RanchoCucamonga including civilians and military personnel who commute into Los Angeles or Orange County each day
