The area today known as Rancho Cucamonga was first surveyed by Captain George Willcox on February 19, 1851 as part of a land grant he received from Mexican President Agustín de Santa Anna for his services during the War of 1846-48 against American forces. In 1881, Jerome D Smith and Augustus Earle purchased 2,500 acres (10 square kilometers) of this land from José Antonio Flores y Pacheco at what is now called Villa Park Boulevard and Alameda Street in North Hollywood. They named their new ranch after Lorenzo Douglass - an American Revolutionary War hero who had fought at Bunker Hill Battle with British troops under General Howe - which they located along present day Mulholland Drive in Brentwood Village then part of Echo Park Heights neighborhood today). The rancho was given to Francisco J. Borrego by the Baca brothers in 1834. The Borrego family ran the land until it was sold to the California Gold Rush town of Fillmore in 1858.
