The name comes from the word "cucamonga," which means "wild olive" and refers to the many wild olive trees that once grew here. The rancho was granted to Jose Gabriel de la Garza y Costilla in 1821. In 1923, the community acquired its current name from Rancho Niguel, a Mexican land grant that had been given to Garvey's father-in-law, José Antonio Nunez. The ranchos were originally large tracts of land measuring over one million acres. Today, there are only a few hundred acres remaining on the originalranchos. The area now known as Rancho Cucamonga was first populated by Native Americans such as the Bidwells, Hahns and others who lived near what is now State Route 138 and San Bernardino Road. In 1853 Juan Bautista Alvarado granted part of his Rancho Santa Anita to James Purdy for settlement by white men. Purdy named his new settlement after his patron saint, Santa Ana de la Cañada del Oro (San Anselmo Hill). There were several small ranches throughout this time period before Rancho Niguel was developed in 1923 by José Antonio Nunez and Manuel Nieto with help from Los Angeles County Surveyor General George Wittek. It consisted of 640 square miles including present day Antelope Valley and portions of Pomona and Claremont counties. The grant was divided into eight parts which became known as "ranchos". It took until 1960 for development to finally begin on all 8 branchos which are today.: There have been two local revolts against developer plans: the 1968 uprising at Saugus Canyon about 100 miles south of downtown LOS ANGELES led by farmer Donny Hathaway; and the 1999 revolt near Escondido about 120 miles north of LOS ANGELES led by farmhands Bobby Sands and Jesus Campillo among others.. All rebellions failed because developers felt they could control these areas if they wanted to do so.. Developers continue to purchase parcels east or west of Saugus Canyon without any public input or opposition despite protests from residents living along their routes

It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rancho Cucamonga was founded in 1879 by John Sutter and his brother Uriah Cucamonga. The first post office in Rancho Cucamonga opened in 1881. Rancho Cucamonga became a city on July 1, 1990 The history of Rancho Cucamonga begins with John Sutter and Uriah Cucounida's attempt to build a ranchos near present-day Riverside and San Bernardino Counties during the late 1800s. In 1879, Sutter and his brother purchased 640 acres of land from José Altamont for $5 per acre. Upon arrival in southern California, the brothers began construction on their new rancho - originally called Horse Canyon after one of their horses which had died while out grazing nearby. In early 1880, they added another 400 acres to the rancho - becoming known as Rancho Laguna Seca due to its proximity to Lake Laguna and ocean views looking southward towards points such as Point Mugu and Capistrano Island. By 1882, both Sutter and his brother were running what is now known as the Fruit Company - which grew oranges, apples (the first fruits grown there), grapes, vegetables (including chili), watermelons, potatoes – all without irrigation or other modern methods then available! During this time period there were no trains passing through downtown Riverside so residents relied heavily on horseback carriage transportation for goods necessary for their lives including flour for breadmaking along with other important items like nails and hardware needed for home building repairs etc.. All this changed when Congress passed an Act entitled "An Act To provide For More Effective Administration Of Indian Affairs" on November 2nd 1885 which created US Bureau of Indian Affairs within Department of Interior creating a need for better transportation between various reservations across America including parts of Southern California where people depended on these goods for sustenance! This act also authorized Chaffey Brothers & Co., better known today as La Cañada Flintridge Transportation Company to establish service between Los Angeles Union Station/Pasadena Airport Terminal (now Pearson International Airport) northward via old Route 66 corridor until finally reaching Fillmore Avenue eastbound at Claremont Road in Fillmore Heights! A few years later on May 12th 1888 railroad officials entered into an agreement with Chaffey Brothers & Co./La Cañada Flintridge Transportation Company providing rail storage facilities adjacent to Presidio Boulevard east of Pasadena Junction/USAirport Field until finally reaching Fillmore Avenue eastbound at Claremont Roadfillmore Heights; this allowed greater access by commerce not only from Downtown Los Angeles but also inland from it making early development more accessible leading to more Restrictive Land Laws being passed throughout the late 1800s reflecting changing social norms about resources nonrenewable versus renewable types!! This increased access not only led to increased commercial activity but also resulted in increased housing development around Downtown Los Angeles Additionally over time Agricultural production developed further neighboring smaller towns such as Downey Village Raton Valley Norwalk PomonaWest CovinaGlendale BurbankOntario
