Rancho Cucamonga was first designated as a ranch by Governor Manuel Micheltorena on October 2, 1857. Rancho Cucamonga became part of the US General Land Office in 1881 and it was sold to the Baldwins. The Baldwins leased it to various people until 1912 when Harry Fenton bought it from the Baldwins and began operating it as a cattle farm. In 1916, Fenton sold the property to John D. Rockefeller and his brother Nelson Rockefeller who developed it into what is now Rancho Cucamonga County. The early history of Rancho Cucamonga can be found in numerous journals, including "An Indians' History of Southern California" by James Purdy and "A Topographical Dictionary of Northern California" by J.B. Leland which were published in 1848-1849. It is generally agreed that Juan Bautista de Anza led an expedition southward from Los Angeles overland in 1776 for the purpose of establishing permanent Mexican occupancy on this area now located within Riverside County, then known as Alta California Province (Plate XVIII). This group traveled through what is now Orange County before landing at San Bernardino on September 12th, 1776 near present-day Walnut Creek (now Bitonto) along with 10 soldiers and 11 dogs march ing northward towards Monterey Bay via Camp San Carlos Mission; they left behind two smallpox infected tents, supplies for their journey ashore and seeds for future plants (Finch). The grantees or suisants who arrived at Rancho Cucamonga included José Antonio Yorba (1793-1868), Francisco Palou (1800-1872), José Gomez y Valdez (baptized December 21st, 1800), Mariano Castro y Ulloa(1794-1873), Manuel Nieto(1798-1877) Alonso Alvarez de la Llave(1800-1865), Sebastián Vizcaino y Arellano(baptized November 7th 1800?), Pedro Menendez de la Barranca(? - ?)(died January 20th 1846?), Vicente Guerrero y Costilla(? - ?)() and Bernardo Lara y Broda.(21 May 1775 - died March 15th 1865?). Only sporadic exploration took place during these years while most of the land lay under natural growth rather than being surveyed or patented like later ranches such as Gaviota or Imperial Valley where man had played an important role throughout its history starting with Mission Santa Ana’s establishment over 100 years earlier in 1769! Gabriel García Márquez wrote about life on these frontier parcels: “In 1850 half a million acres – nearly three fourths of all remaining Mexican land east of Albuquerque – still lay unclaimed within our borders;1 but we had discovered oil reserves there too”2 . As mentioned previously this region remained largely undeveloped until after World War II when new oil wells were drilled hereabouts followed by other industry development such as agriculture which has continued to play an important role ever since. Rancho Cucamonga was founded in 1871 by Don José Antonio Cucamonga. The Rancho was granted to José and his wife, María del Carmen Cortés, in 1874. It became a part of the California Gold Rush on July 29, 1848 when Hugh Jackman and 10 other men discovered gold near present-day Rancho Cucamonga. The first post office at Rancho Cucamonga was established in 1876. The rancho was sold to Hacienda Sepulveda in 1907 and it became part of the newly formed County of Riverside on December 3, 1912. In 1914, the county seat moved from Corona to Rancho Cucamonga.
