The Winchesters were early pioneers in the development of optics, and their products became well-known throughout the United States. In 1903, they began selling scopes through a store located on Fourth Street in downtown Rancho Cordova. By 1916, the company had moved to its current location on East side of Main Street in town. Rancho Cordova scopes were highly standardized and reliable during their time, making them very sought-after by shooters around the world. It was named for José Altuve de Cordova, one of Mexico's leading generals during the Mexican-American War and an owner of Rancho Santa Cruz. The county seat is Santa Clara. The population was 2,958,827 as of 2010. The area that now includes Rancho Cordova was first purchased by José Altuve de Cordova in 1847 from Santiago Rodríguez. He began to develop it into a small farming community with wife María Teresa García and their six children. ranchos cordovas became part of Alta California County on January 29, 1850 when it was created from part of Contra Costa County. In 1853, José Altuve de Cordova sold his interest in Rancho Santa Cruz to James Phelan for $1,000 cash and 20 acres (81 hectares). James Phelan founded the city of San Francisco on Angel Island near what is now Yerba Buena Park in 1854 and developed the land around Rancho Santa Cruz into a small town called "Palo Alto." In 1860, Phelan sold his interest in Palo Alto to George Waddell who established Waddells Mill on Half Moon Bay which became one of North America's most important mills during the late 19th century. In 1865, Waddell sold his mill to David Starr Jordan who used it as headquarters for Chico National Bank before moving it to Redwood City in 1912 where he started another bank there called First American National Bank which came about after World War I when America unified its banks under one roof. In 1927 Juanita Sánchez married Carlos Márquez Bandarán who had arrived from Mexico two years earlier as a shepherdess with her brother Antonio López Bandarán to take up some land that Carlos' father had bought at Costilla Indian Reservation east of Reno Nevada for $4 per acre (0.24 ha). They moved onto 640 acres (248 ha) adjacent to Los Gatos Creek where they built a house and planted maize and other crops that were later domesticated by humans. Their son Fernando Sánchez Bandarán also grew up here and played football for University of Notre Dame before becoming president pro tempore of the state senate from 1990-1994
There are a few different histories of Rancho Cordova, California. The original rancho was established in 1848 by Hacienda Blanca owners Manuel and Marcela Cordova. The name was changed to Rancho San Pablo in 1874 after the sale of their holdings to the United States government. In 1879, the alpha landowner, Antonio L. Alvarado, sold his interest in the rancho to José Néstor Cámpora. The rancho passed through several hands until it came into ownership of José María Salinas in 1923. As part of the 1947 statehood effort, Californias new constitution granted Rancho Cordova title to 1/4 square mile parcel that included present-day Rancho Cordova and portions of adjacent missions (Alta Mesa and Mission Viejo). Salinas used the land for cattle grazing and agricultural purposes until he sold it to another rancher in 1957. In 1978, José Ortega purchased the rancho from Salinas and has devoted its remaining years to developing it into a major wine-growing region
