Rancho Cordova is a census-designated place in Sonoma County, California. The population was 8,827 at the 2010 census. It is located on the western edge of Napa Valley and is bordered by Calistoga to the south, Yountville to the east, Petaluma to the north and Diablo Lake to the west. The first Europeans to visit Rancho Cordova were soldiers under General George Armstrong Custer in 1853 when he was looking for a new base of operations for his army during its campaign against Native Americans in Oregon. The grant included about . After Wolk's death in 1868, his widow sold most of her holdings back to Fajardo for $1 million dollars. In 1875, cattle ranchers Jack Bowers and Myron Hixon bought some of Fajardo's remaining properties including Rancho cordova from him. They built a rustling station near present day Petaluma before moving their operations into it in 1880. Over time more people started arriving in town as winemaking became an important industry hereabouts (the first wine made here was called "Petaluma" after nearby Petaluma Valley). A post office was opened at Rancho cordova on July 22, 1886 by Leland Stanford Sr., father of famed railroad magnate Leland Stanford Jr.. The original building still stands today - it is a two-story redbrick structure that has been renovated several times over its history (most recently as a hotel). A school was built on the same site around 1915 which served Grade School students until 1926 when they moved up North into Rutherford Heights east of downtown Petaluma. That year however Main Street got too wide so they built another school which still stands today - it is known locally as "The Lady" because it once housed both schools together - inside an old cotton gin next door! An engine house/shop and garage were also built here around this time but these have not survived intact since being torn down during World War II due to their use as munitions storage facilities etc.. In 1957 Style magazine featured an article about " Californian Villages ", one such village being Rancho Cordova which then boasted 'an economy based largely upon agriculture'. From this article Big Macs began appearing throughout much of Northern California!!' . A movie set was constructed near Foster City for filming starring Don Ameche (Hollywood vet) and Jane Curtin ( niece of Senator Pyle) but only lasted six weeks before being pulled down due lack of money etc... Later that year Paramount Pictures released their own version starred Robert Wagner and Julie Harris with Don Ameche returning ..... finally we can all say our little piece part in making Hollywood History!

The rancho became important for its grazing and agricultural resources. In 1871, Charles Waddell bought the Rancho Cordova from the Missionaries and developed it into an agricultural community with some of the first irrigation systems in California. The community experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s as people migrated to Los Angeles County to work in industries such as agriculture, industrial production, and service jobs. They built churches, schools, businesses, and homes along Santa Monica Boulevard. The town reached its peak around 1910 when it had a population of more than 10,000 people. However, due to immigration restrictions placed on Mexicans after World War I, Rancho Cordova gradually declined throughout the 1920s and 1930s until it fell apart by 1940. It has been inactive since then and is now a protected historical area that offers unusual opportunities for exploration and tourism.
