Rancho Cordova, California was founded by the Hetch Hetchy Company in 1864. The rancho became part of the United States in 1872. Rancho Cordova was a stop on an important wagon road connecting Nevada and California. In 1902, it was renamed Northridge and has since been known as one of the most affluent areas in Los Angeles County.
In 1847, Rancho Cordova was granted to José Antonio Carrillo by Governor Manuel Nieto. Carrillo and his wife, María Antonia Vallejo y Sánchez, took up residence in the rancho on November 10 of that year. The original adobe buildings still stand today as part of the Rancho Cordova Historical Park. In 1862, after Mexican independence was gained from Spain, the Carrillos sold their interest in the rancho to Francisco Palma and his friend Jesús Aguilar. The new owners hired an American-born photographer named George Eastman to take photos of their properties for sale in Western publications such as "The New York Times". In 1881, following a fire that destroyed much of downtown San Diego, then-Mayor James Hinchcliffe authorized the construction of a water tower at Cordova Avenue and Mission Street. This project cost $6000 and was completed in 1883. Rancho Cordova also became involved in local politics during this time period with its mayor being elected twice (1884-1885 & 1886-1887). On October 20th, 1912 a small fire broke out at one of the ranchos located near present day Hillcrest Drive and Mountain View Boulevard; it quickly grew out into a large conflagration which consumed many homes and businesses before finally extinguishing just north of University Avenue. At least 25 people were killed within minutes OF THE FIRE starter + 50+ injured including some who had been burned beyond recognition! A MAJOR PARTICIPANT IN THIS DISASTER WAS ONE OF JOSÉ ANTONIO CARRILLO'S DAUGHTERS WHO LIVED AT RANCHO CORDOVA AND HELPED OUT WITH THE RESPONSE TO THE FLAMES
