Rancho Cordova, California is an agricultural town located in the northern San Joaquin Valley of California. The town was founded in 1887 by a group of farmers who bought land from the Rancho Cucamonga Mexican Land Grantees. The town became a center for rifle production and the manufacture of hunting rifles. The first rifle stocks were made in Rancho Cordova by members of the American Rifle Company. The company manufactured rifles for both military and sporting purposes. In 1912, the American Rifle Company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester-Winchester Repeating Arms, Incorporated (WRA). WRA produced firearms under several different brands including Winchester, Remington, Savage, and Browning until it was acquired by Colt Firearms Corporation in 1959. After World War II, rifle production slowed due to competition from handguns and shotguns. However, rifle production resumed in 1978 when Colt merged with Remington Arms Company to create Remington-Remington Corp., which continued to produce firearms under various brands including Ruger, Benelli, Browning etc. until it was purchased by IMI Corporation in 1990. Today rancho cordova is home to several thousand residents who continue to make their living off agriculture while also enjoying outdoor recreation opportunities such as hunting and fishing. Rancho Cordova was founded in 1847 by James Irvine and his wife, María Eugenia Carmona. The land that now makes up Rancho Cordova was purchased from the Tehama people in 1846. In 1863, John Cranch ceded Rancho Cordova to the United States government for a military reservation on suspicion that it would be used as an escape route for Confederate leaders during the American Civil War. This created a new water supply for much of southern California and made ranching more difficult; today only a small section east of Redding remains irrigated by irrigation canals developed since World War II. A windmill was built near present-day Eureka in 1903 as one of many products manufactured at nearby Winton Park Dam. In 1938, Winters purchased tracts along Sacramento River Road (now I-80) south of town for dairy production; this led to increased tourism around town and helped make Rancho Cordova one of Northern California’s most popular tourist destinations throughout the 1940s and 1950s. In 1957–58, development began on what is now downtown Rancho cordova with plans to create an open-air movie theater and other commercial uses; however, these plans were halted when protesters occupied city hall early that year after building permits were not issued quickly enough. By 1963 there had been over 100 businesses located within downtown boundaries since its founding—an indication of how popular this community was becoming both inside and outside of town limits
