Sutter's ranch passed through several hands before he sold it to James Wolkentin in 1887. Wolkentin renamed it Rancho Santa Clara after Santa Clara County, California. Because of its central location, Rancho Santa Clara became an important agricultural center during the early 20th century. In 1916, however, World War I forced many farmers to leave their properties and the town declined thereafter. However, due to its unique history and architecture, Rancho Cordova has been preserved as a historical landmark.
Rancho Cordova was a land grant given to José Antonio Vargas by the Mexican government in 1846. The rancho ran from the present-day town of Cordova east to the Rincon hills and south to the San Joaquin River. It covered an area of about 350 square miles (1,000 square kilometers). The first European settler in Rancho Cordova was José de la Torre, who arrived in 1847. In 1849, Francisco Javier Peralta acquired part of Rancho Cordova from Torre. He also founded what is today Monterey County. In 1857, Miguel Mora purchased Rancho Cordova from Peralta. He moved his family to rancho in 1861 and made it his personal property. From 1865 until his death in 1925, Mora was one of the two most powerful landowners in California.
