Gun targets have been a part of Rancho Cordova history for over 100 years. The first targets were made by the Wesson Manufacturing Company in 1878. In 1915, the shooting club "Rancho Cordova Rifle and Pistol Club" was formed in honor of Colonel John O'Neill, who had donated land to the city of Rancho Cordova. The club started target practice on the colonel's property and soon became well-known throughout the city. From 1915 to 1935, target shootings were held at various locations in and around Rancho Cordova each month. During World War II, gunners from San Diego stationed at Camp Kearney used Rancho Cordova as their shooting range. After the war ended, target shooting resumed at various locations within town limits until it was discontinued in 1957 due to growing public concerns about ammunition shortages and guns being used for other than lawful purposes. In 1978, local author Don Freeman wrote a book about Rancho Cordova's Gun Target History which has since become an influential source of information for anyone interested in understanding this unique form of recreation/sport. The book remains available online at numerous websites including Google Books and Amazon Kindle Store. Since its publication, many ranchos cordovana residents have purchased or received copies as gifts from friends or family members. Many people consider thisbook their favorite resource on our town’s history because it provides such interesting insight into what makes our community so special – its traditions dating back to pioneer times!

In 1915–16 David Stone built what is now known as Stone Canyon Elementary School which served grades K-8 along with the town hall until 1958 when it burned down while under construction. During World War II Rancho Cordova served as an airbase for U-2s flown over Orange County; many homes were used as air raid shelters dug into hillsides outside town including those on Crestwood Drive which still stand today! After the war ended rancho cordova reverted back to its pre-war agricultural purposes with small farms including ranches providing milk, eggs and cattle products to local markets throughout Kern County while also servicing several small towns within minutes' drive like Bakersfield and Big Bear Lake near Salinas Valley
