Rancho Cordova, California was founded in 1847 by brothers Capt. Juan and José Copley Cordova. The Rancho was located in present-day Sonoma County and consisted of about 640 acres (248 hectares). In 1853, the brothers sold the Rancho to James Wickersham for $6,000. Wickersham turned it into a cattle ranch, providing feed for his cows and horses. The property continued to be used as a cattle ranch until 1896 when it was donated to the University of California at Berkeley by George Hearst.
Rancho Cordova was founded in 1846 by couple of Mexicans, José and Maria Cordova. It was a small ranch with around 140 acres that the cordovas rented from the Rancho San Rafael. In 1853, they bought the ranch from the San Rafael ranchers and started to grow crops and raise livestock. The first American settlers who arrived in California were Mexican gold seekers in 1849-50, led by General John C. Fremont. They found some fields of greenery but no water so they abandoned their attempt to find gold. In 1863, Mexico gained its independence from Spain and made efforts to improve relations with the United States. President Abraham Lincoln approved a resolution for the U.S.-Mexico Joint Commission on Land Claims which awarded land east of Bakersfield to Mexico for development as part of what is now known as Rancho Santa Anita Hills (Rancho Cordova included). The Cordovas continued to farm their land until 1886 when they sold it all back to the government for $1 million dollars
