Rancho Cordova is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. It was founded in 1887 by George C. Smith and his brothers as a cattle ranch on the east side of Rancho Rinconada. The town grew rapidly during the early years of the century due to its location on an important trade route between Bakersfield and Los Angeles. By 1912, Rancho Cordova had a population of over 1,000 people and it became one of the most prosperous small towns in southern California. In 1930, the town was renamed after General Jesse James Earl Austin for his role in saving ranchos from foreclosure. Rancho Cordova is located in San Bernardino County, California on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert. The rancho was founded by Don José Nieto in 1849. It includes today’s communities of Cordova and Lancaster. Rancho Cordova was designated a National Monument in 1912. The first Europeans to visit Rancho Cordova were Spanish explorers from northern Mexico who named it La Hacienda de los Reyes (The Ranch of the Kings). In 1849, Don José Nieto purchased 2,500 acres (1 km²) of land southeast of Los Angeles and built a ranch house and other outbuildings that still stand today. He also developed a corn and cattle farming operation which produced over 1 million head of beef by 1915. In 1862, Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna granted him citizenship for his work founding the city of Los Angeles. In response to this honorific, Don José began to receive more donated land in what is now Kern County – making him one of the most important men in early California history. After Santa Anna’s death in 1867, his son Pio X eventually became president because he could not be elected as a Mexican national due to term limits set forth during Mexico’s independence from Spain. During World War II, many Japanese American soldiers living at Fort Point Naval Shipyard were transferred to Camp Hansen on Rancheria Creek resulting in some social changes for those people living near Fort Point along with increased military activity around town which disturbed residents for years afterwards according to author Doug Wexler who wrote about the history of Camp Hansen: “There never was any real understanding or accommodation between local residents and their new occupiers …Living conditions deteriorated rapidly; V-2 attacks against nearby towns brought shortages of food and water; rats infested barracks; disease spread among troops during long absences from home; campfires consumed valuable fuels that would have otherwise been used for civilian purposes”

Rancho Cordova was a ranch that was located in present day Rancho Cordova, California. The land that is now part of Rancho Cordova was purchased by Humboldt County in 1836 and given to José María Narvaez as part of the county's General Grant program. The grant included portions of what are now Orange and San Bernardino counties. In 1847, George C. Smith bought the ranch from Narvaez and developed it into a cattle ranch. In 1892, the property was sold to James Wickersham who Streets named it Rancho Niguel after his home state of New Mexico. In 1923, the name change back to Rancho Cordova after its original owners left the area for lack of grazing land.
Rancho Cordova was founded in 1847 by Jose Maria Cordova as a cattle ranch on the east side of Rancho Viejo. In 1863, theranch was granted to Don José María Cárdenas. It became part of the United States in 1912 and was sold to Edwin Augustus Hearst in 1914. The Hearsts turned it over to the California Conservation Commission in 1934 and it has been used for agriculture, forestry, and other purposes ever since.
