Rancho Cordova, California is home to a rich history of guns and gun hammer. The area has been inhabited by the Mono people for over 10,000 years. In 1853, some ranch hands discovered gold in the area and began mining for it. This led to the construction of two gold mines in Rancho Cordova- one on Woodward Avenue and one on Sutter Street. These mines were soon successful and produced large amounts of gold. The miners also developed a strong interest in using guns for protection against federal agents. In 1864, the US Government began managing the Gold Rush in California. As part of this effort, soldiers were sent to build roads and bridges across Mono Lake so that wagonloads of goods could be transported from town to town during the rush. One such soldier was Captain John Cockerill who built a cannonball swing bridge over Mono Lake known as the Cockerill Bridge (now called Tower Bridge). Rancho Cordova was founded in 1887 by ranchers and farmers who moved from central California to escape the drought.

In 1857, Don Carlos Herrera patented three thousand acres (1 hectare) of land adjacent to Rancho Santa Margarita for what is now the city of Sacramento. In 1870, Antonio Zamora purchased two hundred acres (8 hectares) northeast of Rancho Santa Margarita from Padres Francisco de Borrego and José Altamirano y Vargas. He renamed it "Rancho Zamora". In 1898, Eduardo Cisneros bought eleven hundred acres (40 hectares) southeast of rancho Zamora from Antonio Zamora for $10,000 dollars. In 1904-05, Julio Iglesias leased four thousand nine hundred acres (18 hectares) northwest of ranch Zamora from Don Enrique Peralta for $2 an acre ($16 an hectare). Don Enrique Peralta sold his interest in ranch Zapata to James Fenton in 1907 for $50 million dollars ($970 millionUSD). At that time, ranchers were leasing their land out at various prices and terms depending on how much water they could irrigate or graze livestock on with their own hands or through irrigation canals built by railroads into central California or Oregon. Coast Rancheros leased large tracts adjoining coastal prairies near Monterey Bay for grazing purposes between 1915 and 1925; these leases continued until 1978 when all remaining coast ranches except one were acquired by the state government as part of National Landmark Program #5-A-1B-12G known as Tierra del Fuego National Monument/Monument Valley National Park System

Today, there are a few small patches of remnant gardens and trees scattered around the town square while large areas have been leased out for residential purposes or developed into industrial parks.
