In 1860, Hiram Maxim established an ammunition plant here that became one of the largest in Southern California and employed over 1,000 workers until it closed in 1925. The mill also produced flour for local markets and shipped to other parts of America According to the 2000 US Census there were 11,412 people living in Rancho Cordova; 7% were Latino Americanos (of any race), 31% were white non-Hispanicborn residents (non-Latino American citizens who are not native Californians), 17% Asians or Pacific Islanders (of any race), 16% black or African American residents (Non-Latino American citizens who are not natives Californians) and 5% some other race resident

Rancho Cordova was established in 1871 by ranchers from Rancho San Antonio de Bexar. The site is located about 20 miles east of San Francisco and 10 miles north of Los Angeles. It was named for the Cordova River, which bisected the ranch. In 1916, the ranch was sold to Hollywood producer William Hutton. Hutton turned it into a movie set and named it after his ranch in California's Mojave Desert. The Rancho Cordova area has been used for grazing, filming, and military exercises since the 1800s. The first permanent settlers arrived here in 1851, and by 1865, there were over 100 people living on the ranch. The huge Rancho San Antonio de Bexar property encompassed more than 350 square miles (1,000 km2). It had a population of 3,500 people in 1850 and 8,000 by 1870. In 1871, the original ranchers who founded Rancho Cordova decided to start a cattle drive from their properties on the east side of San Andreas Valley to sell their stock to others who lived west of Pasadena or north of Los Angeles. They built four posts on what is now known as Highland Boulevard near present-day Encinitas Boulevard in order to provide security for their herd while traveling downriver each week across Mexican territory controlled by General Ignacio Zaragoza y Costilla during California's Alta California period (1846-1848). At its peak in 1872-3the ranches contained some 25 thousand head of beef cattle and 5 thousand horses—a haul that would have generated an annual income totaling $$$$$$$$$$. In 1916 William Hutton acquired this movie set called "Rancho Cordova" from Hollywood producer Harry Cohn - one of America’s richest men at that time - because he wanted to use it as part of his production company “Hollywood Pictures” which he started with $$$$ million dollars loaned from American Express Company Chairman James Wirtz Sr.. By 1926 Hollywood Picture Productions had produced over 100 movies including "This Is Our Year" starring Rudolph Valentino and "A Star Is Born".
The rancho was a grant from the Spanish crown to José Maria Cordova, an Rancho Grantee. The land was purchased in 1848 by John Sutter who built the first settlement on it in 1849. In 1862, Don Carlos Herrera granted Rancho Cordova to his son, Don José Herrera. The property passed through several hands until it was sold to banker George Hearst in 1907. He donated it to the University of California at Berkeley.
