Poway is a city in California, United States. It was incorporated on April 20, 1892. Poway borders the San Diego metropolitan area to the south and east, Imperial County to the north and west, and Riverside County to the northwest. The population of Poway was 382 at the 2010 census. The first people inhabiting what is now Poway were Native Americans who hunted deer and other animals in the areas that are now downtown Poway and surrounding hills. In 1814 Mexico acquired Rancho San Marcos from Antonio López de Santa Anna as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American War. On May 3, 1846, US Army Captain George Armstrong Custer discovered gold in present-day Poway while hunting buffalo nearpresent-day Topanga Canyon. At this discovery, nearby residents began calling their community "Poway". The name "Poway" was likely derived from two words – pueblo meaning town or settlement and ayudar – help (from ayuda – help). In 1892 about 40 families moved into what is today's Poway from El Sobrante because of its abundant water resources created by underground springs fed by Mono Lake. By 1910 there were over 500 residents living in Poway with a variety of industries including shipsbuilding, printing presses, cattle ranching and chicken packing yards. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II with an influx of soldiers for military service and businesses catering to them such as clothing stores, gas stations and theaters along with housing developments for servicemen outside of town. However due to strong local opposition led by Mayor Harry Pacheco economic development slowed down after 1945 save for a brief period following Expo '68 when new industrial development sprouted up in western Riverside County which sent workers into Poways' residential neighborhoods looking for jobs but without any clear plans or benefits for those within the city limits
