In 1870, following completion of America's first electricity transmission line west from Paso Robles through downtown San Diego, residents voted to incorporate as a city under the name "San Diegans Extension." A year later they annexed parts of unincorporated territory to form Villa del Rey east of Interstate 5 and north of present-day Riverside Drive; this annexation created what is now Alpine Valley Regional Park northeast of downtown Poway and portions nearpresent-day Carlsbad
