Poway is a city located in San Diego County, California. The population was 72,521 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in San Diego County by population and the sixth-largest city in California. Poway sits on a peninsula on the Pacific Ocean between Carlsbad Caverns National Park and Point Loma National Monument. The first people to inhabit Poway were Native American tribes who lived there for centuries before European settlers arrived in 1846. The town was founded on June 6, 1868 by Captain George Ayer as part of a land grant given to him by Governor Pio Pico. After Ayer's death, his wife sold title to the town to Major John Sutter and his brother officers of the U.S. Army under General Bear Ears for $1,000 per acre (approximately $ today). In 1870, Jens Christensen started a grocery store in what is now Poway Center and quickly became one of Southern California's leading grocers. In 1916, Jens Christensen's son Winifred started lighting up Poway with her famous hand-held electric lights while she entertained guests at her home during Prohibition time; this began what is now known as "Poway Night." When World War II began, many local businesses closed due to wartime restrictions but Winifred kept her business open while her husband served in the military; after he returned home they operated it until their deaths in 1957 and 1958 respectively. In later years many small businesses went out of Business because they could not compete with larger retailers or online services like Amazon Web Services which had become available since 1945 when Poway became an incorporated city within San Diego County
