Poway was founded on November 15, 1846 by José Gomez and María de la Concepción Pacheco. The town was named for the rancho (land grant) that had been given to Gomez by Manuel Nieto. Poway became a thriving community with 1,500 residents in 1851. In 1903, San Francisco Supervisor John McLaren donated land to the town for public use. The following year, Poway annexed part of neighboring Carlsbad. In 1924, Poway voters passed a resolution demanding that the city be moved from its original location on the edge of the San Joaquin Valley to more central locations in order to increase its population potential and support larger schools and businesses. However, Mayor Harry Wiman vetoed the motion because he felt that moving the city would create too many problems for Poway which did not have enough financial resources to cope with such an undertaking alone. Nevertheless, Poway's citizens fought hard against any plans to move the city and eventually succeeded in gaining their wish; they were given new land east of Ramona Boulevard near Interstate 80 instead. The current incarnation of Poway began as a small agricultural community with only 10 families in 1951. By 1960, however, it had grown into one of Southern California's most prosperous cities with over 100 thousand residents and strong economic ties to San Bernardino County and Riverside County. Today, Powey is an ethnically diverse town full of people from around Southern California who share one common goal: To make their voices heard at all levels of government.
