Poway is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 67,871 at the 2010 census. Poway is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. The town of Poway was founded by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on November 5, 1821 as Rancho Californio de la Mesa y el Puerto (Rancho California), as part of Anza Province. On October 15, 1846, it became part of Mexican State of Baja California and renamed Nuevo Pueblo de Mexico City de la Frontera (New Pueblo of Mexico City on the Border). On February 14, 1850 it again became part of Mexican State of Baja California and became known as Nuevo Pueblo de Poway (New Pueblo of Poway). It remained an unincorporated community until it incorporated as a city in 1959. Poway's history began with Spanish missions founded in 1769 and continued through American occupation during World War II when Japanese forces occupied the area for three months from December 8 to January 6, 1942. Afterward many residents immigrated to the United States including Alvarado Castro who started Highway 1 which now runs through downtown Poway. Many other businesses were established and continue to operate today such as Pacific Sun Furniture which has been in business since 1907 and Jardín Botánico which opened its doors in 1916. In 1969 interest in moving away from downtown grew so much that a referendum was held asking whether or not Poways incorporation into San Diego should be allowed based on this trend; with over 60% voting to incorporation within the next year both cities merged intoSan Diego County effective February 2nd 1970. This event has led to various nickname given to parts or all of Poway such as "The New Town". A variety nightlife events are also popular throughout the year including Art Night at Dowdle Park followed by fireworks displays at Point Loma lighthouse every Fourth Of July weekend As well as multiple annual Farmer's markets taking place throughout May/June/July each year

The area now known as Poway was first inhabited by Ohlone Native Americans, who named it Cahuilla after their god, Huitzilopochtli. In 1821, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sailed into what is now Poway Strait and discovered Point Loma on Nov 11th 1769 while sailing under Spanish captain Francisco de la Rúa from Monterey to Isla Santa Cruz. The name "Poway" was given to the settlement by Captain John Broughton during his visit in 1778-79 when he described it as being "an excellent place for sheep." On December 6th 1836 Californian settlers Fortunato Carrillo and José Castro founded Mission San Fernando Rey del Mar Church on land that became part of Poway after they sold Rancho Rinconal to Mexican authorities in 1840 following a conflict over grazing rights with two brothers named Manuel and Pedro Carrillo. Pomona Heights subdivision was developed near present day Interstate 10 about east of I-10 south of SR-1 (the old alignment) starting in 1951. In 1863, Generaló Salvador Torres y Arellano decided to move ranchos (land holdings) westward from Tucson into what are now Orange County and San Diego County because of concerns about hostile Apache Indians living near the southern end of Rancho Rinconal which lay within Mexican territory at that time; this action led to some violence between American Indian ranchers and Mexican government troops across Mexico-USSR borders during the late 1860s through 1870s thus leading to various names such as Arizona Territory -Gobernación de Arizona (1867), Alta California -Pueblo Activa (1870), Alta California -Rancho Rinconal y las Animasgas (1871), etc.; finally becoming just Californias Pajarito Valley between Tucson proper and Irvine Chain Lakes beginning January 1st 1873 until Mexican statehood in 1912 ended most vestiges of Anglo ranching thereabouts on December 31st 1883 when all but ten square miles were annexed by Mexicali Municipality which included all or parts of Anaheim Hills Hermosa Beach Newport Beach Laguna Niguel Carlsbad Carmel Mesa El Cajon Escondido National Monument Other places newly annexed were Otis Air Force Base inside Imperial Valley boundary then Jurupa Valley inside Southern California Borderlands map including numerous defunctranchos such as Gaviota Peninsula within Sonoma Co., Big Sur Coastline & Remunerative Fish Riverine Waters withinortment held by Interior Dept.-AngloAcademicResearchInstitute [now UC Davis]
Poway was founded in 1848 by settlers Capt. George Powell and his wife, Lucy. It is the oldest incorporated city in San Diego County and the second largest city in California after Los Angeles. The population of Poway reached 100,000 by 1860. In 1892, it became an independent city and adopted a mayor-council form of government. The first woman to serve as Mayor of Poway was Mrs. Alice Morse who served from 1956 to 1960. In 1932, Poway joined the San Diego metropolitan area as a result of annexation by San Diego City. In 1957, Poway became one of five cities that consolidated into the currentSan Diego County when all but two municipalities within the county were merged into one jurisdiction under the new administration of Supervisor Don Bacon (D-El Cajon). On July 1, 1988, Poway residents voted to become an official part of California’ssan Francisco Bay Area through passage of Proposition T which granted cityhood to both San Francisco and Oakland as well as establishing a boundary between those cities along I-5 south of Market Street
