Poway is a small town located in San Diego County, California. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name Poway comes from the Ohlone language "pa-wáy". The first Europeans to visit what is now Poway were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Sebastián Vizcaino on October 20, 1542. They named it San Miguel de Arroyo Grande because they thought it extended into present day Riverside County. In 1876, John Griffiths donated land to the city of Riverside for its incorporation as a town. In 1907, Poway became an independent municipality with a population of 5,883 citizens when it annexed parts of unincorporated Encinitas and Rancho Cucamonga. Poway has experienced many changes throughout its history including becoming an agricultural center during the Gold Rush period; experiencing significant growth during World War II due to military activity and housing needs; declining populations in the 1970s and 1980s due to increasing commuting distances; and steady growth since 2000 as a result of new development along Interstate 10 near the community's edge. 1) During the Gold Rush period (1848–1853), miners arrived in large numbers in what is now Poway after finding rich deposits of gold in Sinaloa Province (now Mexico). Mining operations continued until 1858 when Indian hostilities ended following General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's invasion of southern California. Although most mines closed by 1859, some continue to be operated today as small claims or concessions rights up until recent times 2) A number of businesses opened up around this time including two stores that remain open today: J&R's Grocery Store on Third Street and H & R Block on Broadway Road 3) Agricultural production increased significantly during this time with crops such as grapes being picked for wine production 4) By 1876 there were seven schools in Poway serving grades 1 through 8 5) The First World War brought about large scale transformation for Poway with much commercial activity taking place both within and outside the community 6) After WWI emerged as one of largest economic waves in Southern California 7) Growth slowed somewhat from 1920 onwards due to political instability caused by factors such as prohibition 8 ) However, prosperity returned soon afterward with increased industrialization 9 ) This led to job losses throughout society which had a direct impact on local communities 10 ) However, despite these challenges over ensuing decades powayanians bounced back 11 ) In 2001 efforts began by then Mayor Kevin Faulconer††to increase employment opportunities within our community 12 ) This included developing multiple industries within our boundaries 13 *) These include information technology services 14 *) As recently as 2007 however evidence indicated that death rates are still high among young adults 15 * With increases in energy prices*† 16 ), unemploymentrates have started to trend upwards 17*)‡ This has had major negative impacts on social stability*‡
