Poway, California is a city located in San Diego County, California. The population was 69,898 at the 2010 census. Poway is one of the oldest communities in San Diego County and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three centuries. In 1821, Juan Bautista Alvarado founded Rancho Cucamonga on the present-day site of Poway. The first post office in Poway opened in 1826. In 1850, the town was renamed after Commodore George Perry during his visit to San Diego Bay. On November 15, 1860, a party of twenty men led by Captain James A. Walton reached Canoga Park Peninsula and camped there until January 11th when they departed due to foggy conditions and returned to Mission Bay on December 12th In 1867–68 two Mormon missionaries from Salt Lake City traveled through San Diego County on their way to preach to native American populations east of San Francisco and began what would be known as the Mormon Trail. They stopped at Coyote Hills about 9 miles south of today’s Poway Village before continuing on into central Orange County near Stockton where they left their carriages at an abandoned ranch called Snydersville and walked all day long before reaching their destination that evening around nightfall— Tohono O’odham Nation (now part of Arizona).
