Poway was founded in 1836 by Don Antonio Chavez and his brother, Manuel. The Chavez brothers were the first to clear land in Poway Creek Valley. They built a small cabin near present-day Hearst Castle on November 5, 1836. It is reported that the first post office in Poway opened on December 15, 1837. In 1840, Don Antonio Chavez married Félixita Acosta and together they started a dairy business in Poway. The couple also operated a sawmill and grist mill in the area until their death in 1865. In 1861, the Chavises moved to Imperial County and continued their dairy business there until their deaths in 1892 and 1916 respectively. In 1936, both of Poway's peaks were named after them – Peak of the Chavises (1936) and Peak of Acosta (1916).
