Poway is a city in the San Diego County, California metropolitan area. As of 2010, the population was 713,362. It is located on the eastern edge of the county and shares borders with Imperial Beach to the east, La Jolla to the south, and Citizens Park to the west. The city was founded in 1887 by John Teller as Poway Junction. In 1923, Poway became an incorporated municipality under the name of Poway Heights. On January 1, 1996, Poway merged with neighboring La Jolla and annexed nearby Carlsbad to form a new city located on both sides of San Marcos River.

In 1868, Rancho San Rafael got its name from Poway Creek which ran through it. The land that now makes up Poway was purchased from Mexican landowners by American pioneers in 1875 and became part of the newly organized Town of San Diego on December 16, 1880. The town site would be enlarged again with purchases in 1886 and 1912. In 1916, Poway voters passed an ordinance creating a municipal government with a Mayor-Council form of government as well as establishing water and sewer service within the limits of the new municipality. This setup served as model for other municipalities throughout Southern California during World War I; however, due to World War II restrictions on military housing developments within city limits, Poway only had fire department and police services until 1955 when they were raised to full municipal status with provision for future annexation into neighboring cities or towns if desired by residents. During 1957-1960s there was also discussion about relocating this university's main campus some 1 mile (1 km) northwestward along Interstate 5 so that it could be closer to residential areas but no such plans materialized until after Jerry Brown took office as Governor of California in 1967 and began his "war on drugs" crusade which led to increased drug traffic into then-San Diego County

In 1827, Heinrich Hertz discovered that when you put an electric current through a wire attached to a battery, it makes an oscillating sound. This discovery allowed him to develop his famous radio telescope which he named “Hertzsprung-Russell” after his two assistants, Averill Harriman and Edward Russell. With this technology, Hertz was able to see things that others could not see because they were too far away or too bright! In 1854, Danish scientist Ole Kirk Christiansen Dreyer created what is thought to be the world’s first true telescopic lens which he called “Kirkcaldy” after his home country Kirkcaldy on Firth of Forth in Scotland. His invention allowed people from all over the world to view beautiful pictures from great distances! By 1907, almost every country had some type of telescopic lens available! By 1932,binoculars had evolved into what we know today! These devices consisted of two lenses placed close together on a eyepiece for viewing purposes; however, these days most people use reflex telescopes (which are similar but have three lenses). Reflex telescopes allow you zoom in or out on images so that you can better see details at various distances!

In 1821, Poway became part of the Mexican state of Yucatán under Presidio Governor José Joaquín Murrieta and was ceded to the United States on February 14, 1846 as part of Admiraal Don Miguel Hidalgo's Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which returned all Mexico's West Coast provinces (except Alta California) to Mexico. On July 12, 1898 during World War I when American forces invaded and occupied Yucatán City under General Antonio Lopez Gerónimo they burned down the old adobe chapel located at 6th Avenue and Broadway with local women working on its restoration together with other Mexican citizens who had volunteered their labor for that purpose. The chapel reopened as Mission San Antonio Arcángel on October 15, 1998 after being closed for many years due to lack of funds from various sources. The history and architecture of this Missions are well known throughout Central America but little is known about Poway until recent times when it began gaining attention as an open-air museum complete with reconstructed Missions and extensive historic documents dating back to 1821 including original drawings/buildings/photos etcetera
Poway was founded on December 14, 1853 by Captain John P. Poway and his wife Maria. The first post office in the town was opened on January 1, 1854. In 1870, the population of Poway reached 2,000 residents. On November 3, 1886, the town renamed itself after San Francisco Mayor James H. McAllister to mark its affiliation with that city's mayor and its history as a part of California's most populous county. In 1951, Poway became a city and has since grown to over 30,000 residents within its limits.
