In 1854, Jephson Ladd purchased some land from Harkness for $1 per acre (0.40 ha). Ladd named his new community "Poway" after Poway Creek which he had seen while surveying his ranch holdings. The post office at Poway was established in 1855, and was called Pueblo de la Cruz until 1861 when it changed its name to Rancho Cucamonga because that was where most people lived at that time. In 1865, Los Angeles County became organized and Poway became part of it; however, until 1889 it continued to be known as Rancho Cucamonga. In 1898 Generoso Flores sold all his interest in Rancho Cucamonga back to Los Angeles county for $2 million ($108 million in 2018 dollars). At this point Poway officially became an unincorporated community within San Diego County. In 1924-1925 United States president Warren G Harding made a speech on shoreline near present day Ramona Boulevard about American industry disappearing behind enemy lines during World War I dueto lack of resources; thisspeech helped spur development around Ramona Boulevard including developing Poway Beach into one of Southern California's leading tourist destinations today (it remains one today with over 12 million visitors each year). In 1933-1934Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced plans for a new airport just outside downtown Los Angeles; this led directly to develope
