Polk's headquarters during his Oregon Trail trip. In 1860–1861, Poway became part of Mexico City when that country became a United States territory following its victory over Spain in the Mexican–American War. Mexican citizens living in the area petitioned US authorities to change their name to "Poway" so they could be included among US citizens. The US government agreed and changed the name to "San Diego". On July 4, 1862 – just one year after Mexico City's incorporation into America – Poway's first post office opened with four mailbags sent from that city by Ulysses S. Grant as part of his campaign for president on behalf of Uncle Sam. A depot on First Street near Park Boulevard was built in 1865 by Pacific Railroad executive J C Summers and served as a stop for cars carrying goods between Southern California and Tehuantepec until 1971 when Interstate 5 replaced rail service across Kern Valley Gate Station through Paso Robles Canyon into Imperial County south of Baja California Sur; this interchange marked the end of trucking services within San Diego county proper but local residents continue to rely on long distance trucking services routed along Interstates 5 and 8 beyond Paso Robles today limitations placed on Truck traffic have greatly reduced these levels

The town of Poway was established on October 12, 1860 by James Wittell with help from Captain John Dominguez who had surveyed the area for Los Angeles County. Wittell named the town for himself and his wife Anna Maria (née Bayless) Wyeth—the widow of Englishman John Wyeth who had settled near San Diego in 1828. Anna Maria’s father-in-law, José Gomez, served as its first mayor. In 1863–64 Captain John Dominguez built a military post on Point Loma to support U.S.-Mexican War efforts against Nicaragua; it became known as Fort Point Loma (now called El Cajon Naval Air Station). In 1873 Mary Anne Rogers set up a grocery store at 41st Avenue and Saguaro Way in what is now downtown Poway which became an early center for retail trade in Poway and neighboringdefine
