Porterville, California is a small town in the Kern County of southern California. The population was 5,914 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Andreas Fault. Porterville has been home to an optometry school since 1881 and also a variety of other businesses, including three grocery stores, two banks and one post office. The first scopes were used by Native Americans for hunting deer and other game. A group ofOptometrists from Porterville formed the American Optometric Association in 1881 in order to promote optical sales throughout America. In 1886, Porterville attained city status and became known as "The City of Scopes". The first scopes that were used in class were acquired by local Optometrist Drs. Wm Hogg and Wm Fenton from Philadelphia company called Brown & Williamson which had imported them from England. Today's Optical School began operations on October 15th, 1881 with 10 students enrolled: Drs Wm Hogg (President), Wm Fenton (Vice President), James Hennessey (Secretary), Oscar Welch (Treasurer)and myself (Director). With such humble beginnings we continue today to provide quality education for our students across all fields of optometry including Vision Science, Dental Medicine and Health Care Administration! In 1902-1903 Porterville was hit hard by Depression-era economic sanctions brought about by United States president Theodore Roosevelt's reclamation program known as "The Placer Gold Rush". Many businesses closed their doors due to lack of funding or simply because people could not afford to buy goods made overseas during this time period especially optics products since Americans could only import materials if they could export crops or produce gold! One business that did stay open however was Mr. Woods' Hardware which continued selling firearms even during prohibition! A new era began when Ulysses S Grant was elected president in 1868 after having served as Ulysses S Grant's Secretary of War under Abraham Lincoln presidency! Under Grant there were many changes taking place within government including the rise of science which would soon impactoptics through research into correcting refractive errors caused by incorrect glasses use during early 20th century!. A new branch called Railroad Research Laboratory was created under Grants auspices to study railroad track problems!!! In 1870-71 American Academy Of Ophthalmology (AAO) held its Fifth Annual Meeting at Porterville resulting in excellent scientific papers being presented!! By 1907 over 50% male physicians practicing optometry had joined AAO compared with only 10% female Physicians back then!!!!! This suggests that women may have become interested in becoming Opticians after experiencing more opportunities outside their homes during this time period!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Addressing these disparities will undoubtedly play a role in future advances for women delegates attend AAO conferences etc etc..... From 1902 until his death on February 14th 1906 Drs Ziegler & Schwarzschild operated what is now known as University Eye Hospital providingsight correction services free of charge To date it remains one of the most successful eye hospitals ever established!!!
