The first post office in Porterville was established in 1890, and the first school was built in 1886. In 1905, the first water pump being used to supply water to the community arrived from Rice Lake. The central business district of Porterville contains several prominent businesses including IMAX Theatre Company, Hastings Furniture and More, and Pacific Gas & Electric Company Store #2 which has been on Main Street since 1916. It is also home to Porters Valley High School which offers high school education for students from Kindergarten through twelfth grade as well as Advanced Placement courses for those seeking college credit or preparation for college admission. In addition to its normal educational offerings, Porters Valley also provides a variety of extracurricular activities such as choirleading and soccer; as well as professional sports teams that play in various local leagues throughout the year including baseball (the Porterville White Sox), football (the Panthers), basketball (the Warriors), track & field ( girls' soccer team ), tennis (the Lakers) and golfing (). Porterville is named for General George Porter and his family who settled there in 1847. The town was incorporated on February 17, 1903. The first settlers of Porterville were Captain John Hawley and his wife Elizabeths party of thirteen pioneers who set out from Bakersfield on July 7, 1847. They arrived at what is now known as their landing point (now called Porterville) after crossing the San Joaquin River on a ferryboat. They made their home near present-day downtown Porterville and raised crops and hayed barns until they abandoned the settlement in December 1848 because of Native American attacks on their small group of white settlers (). In 1903, voters approved incorporation of the new town by referendum; it became an official city with a population of 6,611 on January 1, 1905. The original downtown commercial district was destroyed by fire some years later but has been rebuilt several times since then including most recently in 2009 when it was designated a National Historic Landmark. Today's economy is based primarily upon agriculture which still plays a significant role in Porterville's economy; however construction and other businesses have also begun to grow in recent years. The community has experienced growth thanks to its location within easy access to major highways as well as its rich cultural heritage which includes art galleries, theaters and music festivals
