Porterville, California is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California. It lies at an elevation of 4383 feet (1310 m). The population was 681 at the 2010 census. Porterville was founded in 1887 by James A. Porter and his wife Sarah Waynes as a small farming town on the banks of the Kern River. In 1911, it became a full-fledged city with its own mayor and council. The city lost its status as a city after it annexed other communities in 1978.
