Porterville is a small town in the Inyo County of California, United States. It was founded on May 25, 1864 by George Richardson Porter and his wife Lillie Belle. The first post office in Porterville was established on July 29, 1865. In 1907, the Porterville School District was created when the towns of Porterville and Whitney merged. The new school district had seven schools: one for boys and six for girls. In 1911, the ranches of Waddell and Hightower were acquired by the school district and became part of its landowning system. In 1916, Porterville incorporated as a city under an act of the California State Legislature. At that time it had a population of around 100 people; however, by 1930 it had increased to over 300 people (purchased lands making up most of what is now Porterville). On December 12, 1932 Mayor John Purdy announced that he would not seek reelection because he felt he could serve more effectively as mayor from within the city limits rather than from outside them. This made him first African American mayor in California history. On February 1, 1933 Mayor Purdy announced plans to annex much oflaporterville eastward intothecityof Pasadena effective January 1st 1933 without consulting with Mayor John Purdy or any other City Officials or citizens thereof who resided therein until then! Despite overwhelming protestation to no avail from either Mayor Purdy or any City Councilmember(s), this annexation went ahead without formal vote or notification to any affected Citizens! The only individuals who knew about this beforehand were those employed at Pasadena City Hall where planning for this annexation took place -resulting in many wrongful accusations being leveled against Pasadena City Hall personnel throughout subsequent years!

The history of Porterville can be traced back to 1887 when Calexico rancher John Hargrave settled on land that now includes much of downtown Porterville. After years of development by local entrepreneurs and developers, the city's growth accelerated during the 1990s as businesses moved into downtown from outlying areas including east Side and southwest Side neighborhoods. Downtown Porterville became known as "the financial district" because it has been home to a number of major banks and other financial institutions since its incorporation as a city in 1998. With strong business investment and job creation during this time, downtown Porterville experienced significant growth which continues today. In addition to its role as Economic Development District (EDD) headquarters for Kern County, Downtown Porterville also functions as cultural district ambassador for both USDOCC (University of Southern California) and KFC Yum! Brands Inc., two adjacent corporations with rich histories that are popular tourist destinations around town - not only because they have historic significance but also because they offer contemporary culinary experiences not found elsewhere in town

Porterville was founded in 1874 by George W. Porter, a Mormon settler. The community thrived until the 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed much of California's eastern coast and Porterville was among the first to perish in the disaster. In 1876, Porterville became part of the new Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) and saw rapid growth. By 1910, Porterville had a population of over 1,000 people and it boasted its own school system and library. The town also hosted an annual fair that drew crowds from all over California. However, by 1912 Porterville had lost nearly all its economic viability due to sporadic drought and other problems with the railroad. In 1916, AT&SF merged with Denver & Rio Grande Western (D&RGW) to form the Northern Pacific Railway (NRA). This created a monopoly on rail traffic throughout western California which led to declines in freight shipments and increased competition for jobs in booming cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. In 1922, NRA sold off most of its holdings in western California to become part of Boston & Albuquerque Railroad (BNA). This move marked the beginning of a long decline for Porterville as BNA closed down many of their operations during the Great Depression. However, some semblance of success returned after World War II when BNA merged with Southern Pacific Railroad (SP). This merger led to increased stability for Porterville; however, it would not be regained until 2001 when Amtrak re-opened portions of SP's former line between Stockton and Torrance so that local businesses could once again compete against trainloads from downtown Los Angeles
