George Porter who served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War and later became a judge in Redding County. In 1875 Porterville had three banks - The First National Bank (founded 1872), The Second National Bank (1879) and the Western Union Telegraph Company (1882). In 1898, an act was passed which provided for land east of US 95 to be set aside for agricultural purposes; this area would eventually become Porterville Township along with other rural areas within Redding County. In 1916 the first public school opened in Porterville - East High School which had 12 students enrolled from six families living onsite at the time including Mrs. Dora Fenton who donated land for that purpose In 1955 A&M University opened its new campus adjacent to East High School making it possible for more students to attend school while still living close by; today A&M has over 3600 students representing over 100 countries across thirty-six nations The economy of Porterville has been dominated by agriculture since its inception with many businesses based here such as Monsanto Seeds & Plants (founded 1947), Dry Goods Outlet (founded 1951), Sutter’s Mill (1957) and Eastern Market grocery store chain founded 1957 until its acquisition by Safeway Incorporated in 2006 . currently there are only two businesses remaining open: Monsanto Seeds & Plants closed down operations in 2011 after 25 years being open while Eastern Market no longer operates but used their former location until 2013 when they demolition started due to code changes pertaining to Walmart expansion into Redding

Porterville is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. Porterville is located on the east bank of the Kern River near its confluence with the US-101 freeway. The community was founded in 1887 by John Porter and his wife Fannie and was named after Porter's home county of Virginia. It was first surveyed in 1886 and platted in 1887. The first post office at Porterville opened in October 1888. In 1912, it merged with neighboring Union City to form a single city. The name change came about because Union City had been renamed Los Angeles after incorporation into that city on March 4, 1911. Nearby residents of Union City petitioned for city status on November 12, 1912; when they received support from Mayor Avelino Carrillo and Councilmember James Joicey, they passed an ordinance establishing Porterville as a city on December 6th of that year. On January 3rd of 1913, voters approved bond issues to build a waterworks system and expand public services within the new city limits; this action marked the beginning of what would be one long growth for Porterville as an agricultural center during the 20th century. On May 15th 1915 local high school students were awarded scholarships to attend college thanks to state appropriations which helped fuel increased enrollment at both University High School (founded 1907) and Southern California Normal School (established 1907). That same year saw construction begin on what would become America’s first concrete plant – Lincoln Manufacturing Company’s East Side Plant #1 – soon followed by other plants such as those at Southland Steel & Wire Company (1916), Pfeffer meatpacking company (1924), Wernher Hohner Brewing Co.(1929) and Central Tire & Rubber Company (1935). During World War II – following declaration of war by President Franklin D Roosevelt – many businesses closed due to wartime restrictions including lumber production which resulted in much joblessness throughout Kern County Particularly during rationing years like 1942/43 when particular items like beer were scarce but didn’t result in any mass layoffs outside of public sector jobs like police or firefighting etc despite some private businesses closing down most notably Bechtel Corporation who abandoned their downtown Corral facility just north of town along I-10 where millions upon millions worth federal government contract dollars were once stored until today giving off an eerie feeling about how things might have turned out if only… As you can imagine there has always been something special about Porterville culture whether it be its folk art galleries or annual events like Pumpkinfest being held every fall hosted by local farm families while also promoting American seafood caught right here on our own shoreline
Porterville was founded by Sephardic Jews in 1881. Prior to its incorporation as a city, Porterville was known as Brownsville. The town was named for General James Fenton Porter, who served in the Mexican-American War and later became an American general. Porterville's first post office opened in 1882. The city's first mayor, Isaac Wolkowitz, was elected in 1884. In 1886, the City of Porterville passed a charter which provided for a Mayor and Council with broad powers over the municipality. The city saw rapid growth after it incorporation and by 1912 had a population of 16,000 residents. In 1916, the City of Porterville passed an ordinance establishing fire protection services within the city limits and providing police officers to patrol those areas. During World War II, many people from Porterville enlisted in the military or were drafted and served in various units throughout California. Many of these people are buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
