Porterville, California is a small town located in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,536 at the 2010 census. Porterville is home to the Porterville Unified School District and the Porterville-Lake Elsinore Unified School District. The first settlement in Porterville was made on January 12, 1847 by three settlers named George Widenbach, Daniel Dyer and John Treadwell. The name of the settlement was derived from an Indian word meaning "the bank of the stream". A post office called Porterville was established in 1852, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1916 when Alameda County became part of Inyo County, Porterville became part of that county as well. However, its boundaries changed again in 1922 when Iton Valley became part of Mono County while Lake continued to be served by Iton Valley Post Office. In 1923,[1] Anza-Borrego Desert State Park was created within Inyo County and included most or all of what is now Porterville including most or all of what is now Iton Valley. The park borders Antelope Valley National Grasslands to the north and east; Mono Lake to the south; Geary Rancho San Francisco de la Sierra to the west; and Yucca Mountain to the northwest.[2] On November 5th 1960[3], voters passed Measure M which renamed Anza Borrego Desert State Park into Angeles National Forest with full management authority from agencies within Inyo County subject only to federal laws governing national forests such as hunting regulations etc., except for fire safety purposes which were under state jurisdiction only.[4] This change increased park membership from 2% (less than 10 individuals) to almost 60%. Despite this increase there has been no formal annexation by any other entity since 1960 due mostly because OFA does not allow annexation without prior authorization from both OCFA officials as well as local landowners who own land adjacent thereto

The measure has since been renamed "Porterville 2". The history of Porterville goes back to 1864 when George A. Prentice and Wm. H. Richardson founded a small agricultural community on the banks of the Kern River called Porterville after their father-in-law John Porter who had settled there in 1839. In 1868, George Prentice sold his interest in Portervillet to his son Augustus Prentice who developed it into an important citrus growing community with over 100 acres of land irrigated by canals that ran through town center where fruit trees were grown for export to markets in Southern California and Europe; also found were small retail stores along main streets catering to local farmers and consumers alike; during this time many eminent citizens from around Northern California gathered here for social events such as balls given by prominent families or funerals held at Grace Episcopal Church on Main Street across from post office until fairly late into night hours due to high demand for refreshments coming from attendees inside and outside church walls!
