Porterville is a small town in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 7,914 at the 2010 census. Porterville is located in Butte County and it is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. Porterville was founded by Captain Jonathan Whitney in 1853 as a small ranch camp on White Sands Creek. The town site was platted in 1875 by Hiram Peebles and other local landholders under the name Whitney Station. The first post office in Porterville opened on July 24, 1875. In 1907, the townsite was renamed after General John Porter who had fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of California. In 1916, General John Porter Intermediate School (now Alumni High School) was built; this school still serves as its namesake today. In 1924,General Motors began producing cars at their new GM assembly plant east of Porterville; this led to increased business for the townspeople and made them mayor for one year from 1925 to 1927 Additionally, many businesses were established around this time such as Chevrolet dealerships with Interstate 15 running directly through town center making it easy for drivers to get to work or buy groceries without leaving their car parked at home. After World War II ended, Enterprise Rent-A-Car began providing services here which continued until 1978 when deregulation of transportation policies caused that company's bankruptcy .currently there are no major businesses remaining within the downtown core that would make it an attractive place to live or visit however there are several blocks of high end housing that have drawn attention from people looking for a peaceful oasis away from all bustle and pollution found throughout much larger cities The demographic makeup has changed over time with more recent arrivals being retirees rather than young families; however most residents continue to support agriculture which employs over 60% of residents while also contributing $6 million annually into tax coffers according to figures provided by Mayor Tom McClarty In 1951 Congressman George Ballentine visited Porterville on his way back from campaigning across California ; he observed that conditions were improving but urged state legislators not to accept any federal money earmarked for irrigation projects because they would only lead to more poverty among rural Californians The highlight of my stay came during dinner when I met Representative Robert Wexler who represents our district we spoke about concerns farmers have about dairy farming practices which he says have resulted in mass extinctions of someof our native species along with negative environmental impacts including loss of topsoil used for raising crops .He mentioned specifically a study done recently by University Of North Carolina at Chapel Hill uniting data gathered from aerial surveys with field research conducted near where you live now showed significant loss or degradation happening both above ground and below ground due to grazing activities on private land within your community’s boundaries
